Chapter 4 - The Threat in the Garden

Three weeks passed within the limestone walls of the DeLuca estate, transforming the manor from an armed fortress into a vibrant, living home.

Under Natalie’s guidance, the sterile third-floor nursery was completely dismantled and rebuilt as a state-of-the-art sensory sanctuary: equipped with tactile climbing walls, swing hammocks, soft indirect lighting, and a visual schedule board that Ava navigated with blooming confidence.

Every morning, Natalie and Ava baked gluten-free blueberry scones in the grand kitchen, while Leo and the domestic security team watched in quiet amazement as the little girl who had refused to speak for two years laughed aloud, her words returning in steady, triumphant sentences.

On a crisp Tuesday afternoon in late October, Natalie was walking with Ava through the private walled garden near the southern rose arbor.

Ava was holding a small wooden magnifying glass, examining the veins of fallen maple leaves, holding Natalie’s hand with easy, unforced trust.

A sharp, metallic scrape sounded near the side wrought-iron maintenance gate.

Natalie froze, her instincts flaring instantly. She pulled Ava behind her waist, stepping back toward the stone terrace steps.

Standing on the service path, wearing a tailored navy trench coat and dark leather gloves, was Richard Vance.

At fifty-eight, Richard Vance was the picture of old-money corporate predatory power: silver hair neatly parted, gold-rimmed aviator sunglasses, his posture radiating unearned entitlement and ruthless vanity.

"Good afternoon, Ms. Carter," Richard Vance said, his voice smooth and dripping with calculated menace.

"This is private residential property, Mr. Vance," Natalie replied, her voice dead, level, and clear as she reached into her pocket, pressing the silent emergency panic fob linked to the estate’s security bunker. "You are trespassing on a sovereign residence."

Richard gave a low, condescending laugh, taking two deliberate steps toward them.

"You are an hourly retail clerk who stumbled into a game forty levels above your tax bracket, Natalie," Vance said, peering over his sunglasses at Ava. "You think Damian DeLuca is going to protect you? Men like Damian use people like you as decorative shields. When the probate court convenes next Tuesday, my medical affidavits will be entered into the record, and this child will be placed in the specialized care facility in Lake Forest where she belongs."

He stepped closer, reaching out a leather-gloved finger toward Ava’s hair. "Such a pity she inherited her mother’s fragile mind—"

Before his glove could touch the air an inch from Ava’s face, a steel hand clamped around Richard Vance’s throat like an industrial hydraulic vice.

Damian DeLuca materialized from the boxwood hedges with the explosive, terrifying speed of a striking viper.

He lifted the grown man four inches off the flagstones, driving Richard’s spine back against the stone pillar of the rose arbor with a concussive crash that showered the path in crimson rose petals.

"Touch my daughter," Damian whispered into Richard’s ear, his voice dropping into an octave of pure, apocalyptic darkness, "and I will tear your empire apart brick by brick before the police can find your car."

Richard’s face turned an ugly, mottled purple, his feet kicking uselessly in the air, his hands clawing desperately at Damian’s iron grip.

Leo and two armed operators swarmed the path, their suppressed sidearms held at the low-ready, pinning Richard’s two bodyguards against the perimeter fence.

Damian released his grip with a sudden, contemptuous shove that sent Richard sprawling into the dirt.

"You have six days until the probate tribunal, Richard," Damian said, stepping back and taking Ava’s hand into his own. "Bring your lawyers. Bring your forged affidavits. And prepare to watch your family name be erased from this state."
