Chapter 7 - The Arrest in the Well

Judge Thornton turned her piercing gaze upon Dr. Kenneth Vance.
"Dr. Vance," the judge said, her voice dropping into an octave of lethal judicial authority. "Explain to this court how a child diagnosed in your sworn affidavit as 'completely non-verbal and incapable of environmental interaction' is currently addressing this bench with complete cognitive clarity."
Dr. Vance’s face turned the color of wet drywall. He stammered, clutching the edge of the defense table, his hands trembling so violently that his glasses slipped from his nose. "Your Honor... this... this is a temporary remission induced by adrenaline—"
"The only thing induced in this child was chemical poisoning, Dr. Vance," Special Agent Marcus Miller announced, stepping through the swinging bar into the well of the court.
Agent Miller presented an unsealed, red-tabbed federal dossier stamped with the gold seal of the United States District Court.
"Pursuant to an emergency indictment returned by the federal grand jury forty-five minutes ago," Agent Miller declared, "Richard Vance and Dr. Kenneth Vance are under arrest for forty-two counts of federal healthcare fraud, enterprise conspiracy, child endangerment through the unlawful administration of scheduled toxins, and the attempted fraudulent conversion of eighty million dollars in trust assets."
Four armed federal marshals entered through the side security doors, unholstering heavy stainless-steel handcuffs.
Richard Vance lunged toward the rear exit, but Leo stepped into the aisle, blocking the door like a granite wall, sweeping the older man’s arms behind his bespoke jacket with a practiced, brutal takedown.
CLICK. CLICK.
The steel handcuffs ratcheted tight around Richard’s wrists, his expensive suit tearing against the floorboards as he was hauled to his feet before sixty flashing camera shutters.
"Kenneth! Call the appellate division!" Richard wailed, his aristocratic arrogance completely incinerated as his tears soaked into the courtroom carpet. "Call the Governor!"
"The Governor was briefed on this investigation at six o'clock this morning, Mr. Vance," Judge Thornton stated with freezing clinical detachment. "The petition for conservatorship is dismissed with prejudice. Full, unencumbered legal and physical custody of Ava DeLuca is permanently reaffirmed to Damian DeLuca."
Judge Thornton struck her heavy wooden gavel with a sharp, definitive crack that sounded like the closing of a tomb.

Ava turned around on the platform, throwing her small arms around Natalie’s neck, giggling with pure, radiant happiness.
Damian walked onto the platform, scooping both Natalie and his daughter into his massive, protective arms, lifting his family high into the morning light as the entire gallery erupted into thunderous, standing applause.
