Chapter 1 - The Broken Bowl

The porcelain bowl lay in jagged, cream-colored shards across the dark oak flooring of the breakfast nook. Cold oatmeal, laced with cut strawberries and curdled almond milk, pooled around eighteen-year-old Lily Vance’s bare feet.

Standing three feet away, draped in an immaculate cashmere cardigan and holding a steaming porcelain mug of French roast, was Vivian Vance. Her stepmother’s face was composed into an expression of theatrical, sorrowful pity.

"Look at yourself, Lily," Vivian whispered, her voice pitched perfectly to carry toward the open kitchen archway where the housekeeping staff was quietly polishing silver. "Trembling over breakfast. Dropping family china. It’s the third time this week your motor skills have completely failed you. If your father saw you like this, it would break his heart."

Lily did not reach down to clean the mess. She kept her spine rigid, her fingernails pressing into the palms of her hands until her skin burned.

"I didn't drop it, Vivian," Lily said, her voice quiet, steady, and clear. "You deliberately swept your sleeve across the saucer when I reached for the spoon."

Vivian let out a soft, patronizing sigh, taking a delicate sip from her mug. "Delusional ideation. Classic paranoid projection. Dr. Sterling warned me this would happen when we adjusted your evening sedatives."

"I haven't taken those pills in four days," Lily replied, her hazel eyes locking onto her stepmother’s with an intensity that made Vivian’s smile flicker for a fraction of a second. "I threw them down the drain. My hands stopped shaking yesterday morning."

Vivian took half a step forward, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper meant only for Lily’s ears.

"You think you’re being clever, little girl?" Vivian hissed, the polite mask slipping to reveal the cold, predatory malice beneath. "Your father is in Tokyo for another two weeks finalizing the logistics merger. By the time Ethan steps off that Gulfstream at JFK, the emergency psychiatric conservatorship papers will already be signed by Judge Evelyn Montgomery. You won't be attending Columbia in the fall. You’ll be enrolled in the residential wellness wing at Highview Sanatorium in Vermont. And under Title Four of your mother’s testamentary trust, full management authority over your grandfather's thirty-million-dollar maritime portfolio transfers directly to me as your legal conservator."

Lily felt a chill run down her spine, but she did not back down.

She looked toward the recessed mahogany cabinetry beneath the pantry archway.

Tucked discreetly into the carved molding, disguised as a dark knot in the polished wood, a tiny pinhole camera’s infrared lens glowed faintly. It was connected not to the house’s central security server—which Vivian had re-routed to her personal iPad three months ago—but to an encrypted cellular transponder wired directly to Detective Raymond Harris at the Special Victims and Financial Crimes Task Force.

"You forgot one thing, Vivian," Lily whispered softly.

May you like

"And what is that, sweetheart?" Vivian sneered, stepping past the spilled oatmeal toward the hallway.

"My mother built the digital infrastructure for this entire estate," Lily said. "You only know how to spend the money. You never learned how the walls listen."
