Chapter 5 - The Subterranean Vault

By two o'clock that afternoon, a team of forensic accountants from the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrived at the Vance estate to execute a comprehensive search warrant authorized by the Southern District of New York.
Ethan, Lily, and Detective Harris descended the stone staircase beneath the historic 1920s carriage house on the northern boundary of the property.
In the subterranean storage cellar, behind an antique wine rack, investigators uncovered a heavy steel security vault that Vivian had installed four months earlier under the guise of an art preservation locker.
Detective Harris used a pneumatic extraction tool to breach the electronic digital lock. With a sharp, concussive bang of shearing metal, the heavy steel door swung open.
Inside lay Vivian’s clandestine operational command center: two encrypted hard drives, six private ledger books, and forty-two bottles of high-concentration liquid chloral hydrate and prescription benzodiazepines.
Assistant District Attorney Marcus Reed stepped into the vault, picking up a printed financial spreadsheet from the desk.
"Look at this transaction ledger, Ethan," Marcus Reed said, his expression hardening into pure disgust. "Vivian had already signed a conditional purchase agreement with a private equity group in Zurich, agreeing to liquidate eighty percent of the Clara Lin Maritime Patents forty-eight hours after securing the conservatorship decree."
"And the Highview Sanatorium?" Lily asked, looking at the pharmaceutical bottles.
"Highview wasn't a clinic, Lily," Detective Harris explained grimly. "It was an unlicensed, private holding facility operated by Dr. Sterling specifically for wealthy families seeking to suppress inconvenient heirs and elderly relatives during contested probate disputes. Over the past four years, six other trust beneficiaries have been held in that facility under identical forged psychiatric orders."
Ethan closed his eyes for three seconds, feeling an immense, terrifying wave of horror at how close his daughter had come to being erased from the world.

He reached out, taking Lily’s hand in his, feeling her warm, steady pulse.
"We are dismantling every single brick of that asylum, Detective," Ethan said, his voice flat as iron. "And every doctor, lawyer, and judge on their payroll is going to spend the rest of their lives in federal prison."
