Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Lockdown

Dr. Sterling froze in mid-stride, his face draining of every drop of color as the glass syringe slipped from his trembling fingers, shattering against the hardwood floor.
Vivian gasped, staggering backward until her spine hit the mahogany bookcase, the leather portfolio falling from her hands, spilling the forged guardianship petitions across the rug.
"Ethan...?" Vivian choked out, her voice jumping an octave into wild, frantic panic. "You... you were supposed to be in Tokyo until next week! We were... we were just arranging a medical evaluation for Lily! She’s been deteriorating so rapidly—"
"Shut your mouth, Vivian," Ethan said.
His voice was not loud, but it carried the concussive weight of a freight hammer. He walked across the room, completely bypassing his wife and her cousin, and stopped directly in front of Lily.
Ethan dropped to one knee on the Persian rug. With hands that shook with raw, overwhelming emotion, he wrapped his strong arms around his daughter, pulling her into a fierce, protective embrace, burying his face in her hair.
"I’m here, Lily," Ethan wept softly, his shoulders trembling. "Daddy’s here. I’m so sorry I wasn't listening. I’m so sorry."
Lily wrapped her arms around her father’s neck, her tears finally breaking past her eyelids, washing away months of silent, terrifying isolation.
"I kept the camera running, Dad," Lily whispered against his shoulder. "I recorded everything."
Ethan rose to his full height, turning slowly to face Vivian and Dr. Sterling. The paternal tenderness in his posture vanished entirely, replaced by the terrifying, immovable stillness of a sovereign preparing to execute a traitor.
Detective Raymond Harris stepped forward, flashing a gold federal shield and a certified arrest warrant.
"Dr. Arthur Sterling, Vivian Vance," Detective Harris announced, his voice cutting through the silent room. "You are under arrest for Criminal Conspiracy to Commit Unlawful Imprisonment, Forgery of Judicial Documents, Healthcare Fraud, and Attempted Grand Larceny of Trust Assets exceeding thirty million dollars."
Vivian lunged toward Ethan, her manicured hands clawing at his overcoat. "Ethan, please! It was a mistake! Arthur told me Lily needed treatment! I was only trying to protect our family's reputation!"
Ethan looked down at her with eyes as cold as Arctic slate.
"You didn't want to protect my family, Vivian," Ethan said softly. "You wanted to bury my child in an asylum so you could trade her mother's legacy to pay your gambling debts. You are leaving this house in chains, and you will never see the sun as a free woman again."
Two female sheriff’s deputies moved in with blinding speed, twisting Vivian’s arms behind her back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

Dr. Sterling collapsed into his leather chair, weeping in total, unmitigated ruin as the tactical officers secured his hands in transport cuffs.
As they were dragged down the grand hallway, Vivian’s frantic, echoing screams faded into the distance until the heavy front oak doors slammed shut with concussive finality.
