Chapter 2 - The Velvet Box and the Scream

The neighborhood cul-de-sac was so dead silent you could hear the gentle hum of the pool filter running thirty feet away. Fifty pairs of eyes were glued to the confrontation unfolding beside the splash pool.
Luke stared down at the small black velvet box hovering inches from his chest. His arrogant smirk wavered for a split second, replaced by a flicker of confusion before his bloated ego rushed back in to fill the void. He chuckled nervously, glancing around at the crowd as if sharing an inside joke.
"What's this?" Luke sneered, crossing his arms over his linen shirt. "A parting gift from my ex’s imaginary boyfriend? What, is it a prop wedding ring? Or maybe a gift card to a local diner?"
"Open it, Mr. Hayes," Julian murmured, his voice a smooth, low baritone that carried a lethal, hypnotic weight. "You might find the contents... illuminating."
Luke sneered, rolling his eyes dramatically for Chloe’s benefit. "Fine. Let's humor the actor."
With an exaggerated flick of his wrist, Luke popped the velvet box open, expecting a cheap joke prop, a plastic ring, or perhaps a sarcastic note.
He didn't find a ring.
Resting inside the velvet lining was a sleek, matte-black federal-grade flash drive, accompanied by a folded sheet of heavy cream-colored cardstock embossed with the seal of the United States District Court.
Luke’s eyes scanned the first two lines of the legal document.
The smug color vanished from his face in less than a heartbeat. The crimson flush drained entirely away, leaving his skin the sickly, ashen gray of wet concrete. His jaw went slack, his eyes bulging behind his designer sunglasses as they darted back and forth across the legal terminology.
Then, Luke let out a high-pitched, bloodcurdling scream—a sound so raw, terrified, and animalistic that it made several neighborhood children burst into tears.
Clatter.
The velvet box slipped from his trembling fingers, hitting the concrete pool deck. As it dropped, Luke’s knees buckled underneath him, and he stumbled backward, dropping the federal flash drive onto the hard stone.
The flash drive bounced once, skidding across the patio and coming to a dead stop right at the edge of the water.
Chloe gasped, grabbing Luke’s arm. "Babe! Babe, what is wrong with you?! What is that?!"
Luke couldn't speak. He was hyperventilating, his chest heaving violently, his hands clawing at his throat as if he were choking on invisible air. He stared up at Julian Vance with wide, unmitigated horror, trembling like a leaf in a hurricane.
On that flash drive sat forensic accounting audits, unredacted bank transfer logs, Swiss routing numbers, and ironclad digital evidence of the four million dollars Luke had illegally embezzled from our corporate joint accounts and pension funds over the last three years—money he had systematically hidden to declare bankruptcy, bankrupt my livelihood, and fund Chloe’s luxury penthouse in downtown Boston.
Julian slowly bent down, picked up the velvet box, and slid it back into his pocket. He looked down at the shaking, pathetic wreckage of my ex-husband with supreme, icy contempt.
"Pick up your flash drive, Mr. Hayes," Julian said softly, stepping right over Luke’s sprawled form. "The Department of Justice is very particular about their evidence remaining dry. And federal marshals don't usually appreciate being kept waiting."
Before Luke could scramble forward, the blare of heavy sirens pierced the suburban air.

Three unmarked black federal SUVs rounded the corner of the cul-de-sac, their tires squealing as they pulled up directly behind Luke’s Maserati, blocking it in. Four men in dark tactical windbreakers stamped FBI - FINANCIAL CRIMES DIVISION poured out of the vehicles, their boots pounding against the pavement as they marched straight toward the pool party.
Luke took one look at the federal badges, let out a pathetic sob, and slumped face-first onto the grass, completely undone.
