Chapter 9 - The Final Counter-Strike

The phone rang twice before Julian’s crisp, authoritative voice answered. "Clara? Is everything alright? You sound breathless."
"Arthur Vance just called me," I blurted out, my voice shaking as I backed my car out of the driveway. "He threatened Toby. He said accidents happen to single mothers on dark roads. Julian, he's coming after us."
There was a terrifying, absolute silence on the other end of the line. The temperature in Julian’s voice when he spoke next dropped to absolute zero.
"Where are you right now?" Julian asked, his tone instantly shifting into that of a lethal, calculating tactical commander.
"I'm in my car, heading to pick Toby up from daycare early," I replied, gripping the steering wheel.
"Do not go to the daycare," Julian commanded instantly. "Drive straight to my downtown office garage. I have a federal security detail stationed there waiting for you. I'm dispatching three tactical units to secure your son’s facility right now."
"Julian, what are you going to do?" I asked, my heart racing.
"Arthur Vance just made the fatal mistake of threatening a federal witness and a minor," Julian said, a dark, dangerous edge ringing through his words. "He just signed his own arrest warrant. Sit tight, Clara. Uncle Julian is going to clean house."
Within twenty minutes, I pulled my car into the subterranean secure parking garage of Julian’s downtown law firm. Two armed federal marshals in dark tactical vests immediately stepped forward, guiding me out of my car and securing the area.
An hour later, Toby was safely brought to the office by Julian’s lead security detail, completely unaware of the danger that had just brushed past him.
Up in Julian’s expansive top-floor office, I sat on the leather sofa holding a cup of hot tea while Julian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his phone pressed to his ear, calmly orchestrating a legal and tactical nightmare for Arthur Vance.
"Execute the emergency RICO asset-seizure warrants on all of Arthur Vance’s shell corporations immediately," Julian ordered into the phone, his voice sharp as a razor. "Coordinate with the state police to sweep his residential compounds in Worcester. And ensure an armed federal detainer is placed on him the second he steps foot outside his country club."
He hung up the phone, tossed it onto his mahogany desk, and walked over to where I was sitting. He knelt down beside me, taking my cold hands in his warm, steady grip.
"It's done, Clara," Julian said softly, his ice-blue eyes softening as he looked into my face. "Arthur Vance has just been indicted on charges of conspiracy, witness tampering, and racketeering. Federal marshals are raiding his properties as we speak. He will never, ever be able to touch you or Toby again."
I let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension finally draining out of my muscles. I leaned forward, resting my forehead against his shoulder, letting him hold me in the quiet, secure warmth of his arms.

"You're my guardian angel, Counselor," I murmured against his lapel.
"No, Clara," Julian smiled, kissing the top of my head. "I'm just a man who finally found what he was fighting for."
