Chapter 4 - The Aftermath and the Audit

By evening, the splash pool had been deflated, the paper plates thrown away, and the neighborhood had returned to an eerie, stunned quiet. News vans had briefly cruised down the cul-de-sac before realizing there was no statement to be made, leaving us in peace.

Toby was fast asleep upstairs in his bedroom, exhausted from the excitement of his birthday, clutching his new toy fire truck.

Julian and I sat out on the small wooden back porch, the cool evening breeze rustling through the oak trees. A bottle of chilled white wine sat on the small table between us, untouched.

"The forensic audit is already fully comprehensive," Julian explained, leaning back in his chair, resting his ankle across his knee. "Luke was sloppy. He thought he could hide four million offshore by laundering it through sham shell companies in the Caymans under Chloe’s name. But shell companies leave digital footprints. Especially when you use your personal IP address to authorize the wire transfers."

"He really thought he was untouchable," I murmured, shaking my head as I stared out into the darkening yard. "He spent six months laughing at me, telling me I was a failure, while he was living in a fantasy world built on stolen money."

Julian reached across the small table, gently covering my hand with his. His skin was warm, his touch firm and grounding.

"He's not laughing anymore," Julian said quietly, his ice-blue eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my breath hitch. "And he's never going to hurt you or Toby again. The federal prosecutors are pushing for a mandatory fifteen-year sentence without parole, given the scale of the financial fraud and the deliberate targeting of marital assets during a court-ordered separation."

I looked down at our joined hands. For the first time in my adult life, I didn't feel like I had to constantly look over my shoulder. I didn't feel like I was fighting a losing battle against a rigged system.

"Thank you, Julian," I whispered, looking up into his chiseled face. "I can't even begin to repay you. Your hourly fees alone would cost more than my apartment lease for a decade."

Julian smiled, a slow, gentle expression that made his sharp features look remarkably tender. "Who said anything about fees, Clara? Some cases... some people... are worth taking on for reasons that have nothing to do with billable hours."

A warm flush rose to my cheeks. I cleared my throat softly, pulling my hand away just an inch to take a sip of wine. "Well, regardless... you've given me my life back. And my son's future."

"Your life was always yours, Clara," Julian said firmly. "You just needed someone to help you clear the debris so you could see it."
