Chapter 10 - A Happily Ever After

The applause lasted for nearly ten minutes.
When I walked off the stage, flushed and triumphant, Ethan and Leo were waiting in the wings. Leo threw himself into my arms, almost knocking me over, while Ethan pulled us both into a warm, protective embrace.
"You were incredible, Mommy!" Leo cheered, burying his face in my shoulder.
"Thank you, my sweet boy," I kissed the top of his unruly dark curls.
Ethan looked down at me, his eyes shining with unshed tears of pure joy. "I told you. You were always meant to conquer the world."
Later that evening, after the post-concert gala and the endless well-wishes from old friends and new supporters, we finally returned home.
The downtown condo no longer felt like a cold, sterile museum. It was alive with the sound of laughter, the patter of little feet, and the sweet, lingering notes of a music box playing in the bedroom.
After tucking Leo into bed and reading him his favorite storybook, Ethan and I walked out onto the high-rise balcony.
The Cincinnati skyline stretched out before us, glittering against the midnight sky like a field of scattered diamonds. The rain from months ago was a distant memory, replaced by a crisp, clear autumn breeze that carried the promise of a bright, unclouded future.
Ethan wrapped his arms gently around my waist from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder as we looked out over the city lights.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Mercer," Ethan murmured softly against my ear.
I leaned back into his embrace, placing my hands over his. A peaceful, radiant smile touched my lips.
"I was just thinking about that rainy night at the restaurant," I whispered. "When the delivery driver walked through the doors with an envelope that destroyed my entire world."
Ethan chuckled softly, tightening his arms around me. "Worst anniversary dinner in the history of Cincinnati."
"Maybe," I turned in his arms, looking up into his warm, steady eyes. "Or maybe... it was the best thing that ever happened to me."
Ethan smiled, leaning down to press a tender, lingering kiss to my lips—a kiss full of healing, hope, and an unbreakable love that had risen from the ashes of the past.

"Forever, Claire?" Ethan whispered against my lips.
"Forever, Ethan," I smiled, resting my head against his chest as the city lights twinkled above us, sealing our happily ever after.
