Chapter 4 - The Predator Becomes the Prey

"Who's there?!" Grant’s voice boomed from the foyer.
I clutched the manila folder to my chest, my heart hammering like a trapped bird against my ribs. I bolted toward the balcony doors just as Grant rounded the corner into the living room.
Our eyes locked.
For a fraction of a second, shock registered on his handsome face. Then, rage distorted his features.
"Claire!" he roared, lunging forward.
I threw myself through the glass doors onto the balcony just as Grant’s fingers grazed the hem of my jacket. I scrambled over the wet concrete, adrenaline overriding the lingering weakness from my hospital visit.
"Ethan! Run!" I screamed into the stormy night.
Ethan was already waiting by the exterior fire escape stairs that wound down the side of the luxury high-rise. He grabbed my hand, pulling me over the metal railing as Grant slammed against the glass balcony door, shouting obscenities and pounding his fists against the double-paned glass.
We scrambled down the rusted metal stairs, the rain lashing against our faces, slicking our boots. By the time we hit the dark alleyway where the Subaru was parked, my lungs were burning.
Ethan unlocked the car, shoved me into the passenger seat, and threw the vehicle into reverse, tires screeching as we tore out of the alley and into the rain-drenched Cincinnati traffic.
For several blocks, neither of us spoke. The rhythmic thrum of the windshield wipers filled the terrifying silence.
Finally, I looked down at my hands. Clutched in my white-knuckled grip was the manila folder.
"Did you get it?" Ethan asked, his knuckles white on the steering wheel, his eyes darting to the rear-view mirror to check if we were being followed.
"I got it," I whispered. I opened the folder under the dim dashboard light.
Inside were financial ledgers, offshore account numbers, adoption papers bearing forged signatures—and a birth certificate.
My breath hitched.
I pulled out the birth certificate. The mother's name was listed as *Evelyn Cross*. The father’s name: *Grant Mercer*. Date of birth: December 31, five years ago—the exact night my baby had supposedly died in the hospital.
"They didn't just lie about my baby dying," I whispered, tears streaming down my face, hot and furious. "They stole my child in the delivery room, handed him over to Evelyn, and pretended he was stillborn."
Ethan pulled the car over to the side of a quiet, tree-lined residential street, cutting the engine. He turned to me, his expression hardened into stone.
"Claire, listen to me," Ethan said, reaching out to gently touch my arm. "If what's in that folder is true, your husband isn't just a cheat. He's a criminal. And so is that doctor."
"We need to go to the police," I said, my voice trembling with resolve.
"The police?" Ethan let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Grant Mercer is a billionaire real estate developer. He sits on the board of half the charities and police foundations in Cincinnati. If you walk into a precinct with stolen documents, his lawyers will have you arrested for breaking and entering before you can even say 'child trafficking'."
I stared at him, the brutal truth of his words sinking in. I was trapped.
"Then what do we do?" I asked, my voice breaking.
Ethan leaned back, looking out the rain-spattered windshield. A dangerous, determined glint appeared in his tired eyes.

"We don't go to the police," Ethan said softly. "We go public."
