Chapter 6 - The Tiger’s Den

The grand ballroom of the Cincinnati Skyline Hotel glittered with crystal chandeliers, expensive champagne, and the city’s elite. Men in tailored tuxedos and women in designer gowns mingled beneath towering floral arrangements, laughing and clinking glasses.

At the center of it all stood Grant Mercer, flanked by his mother, Margaret—a formidable woman with iron-gray hair and diamond studs piercing her ears—and Dr. Evelyn Cross, radiant in a crimson silk gown.

Tonight was supposed to be Grant's coronation. He was announcing a multi-million-dollar downtown redevelopment project, alongside a major political endorsement.

He certainly didn't expect his supposedly broken, destitute wife to walk through the front doors.

The double doors of the ballroom swung open. All heads turned.

I didn't wear a borrowed navy dress or cower behind sunglasses. Ethan had helped me procure a stunning, form-fitting emerald green velvet gown—a dress that belonged to an old high-end boutique downtown, paid for with the last of my hidden emergency cash. My hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, and my posture was ramrod straight.

I walked into the ballroom with the poise of a concert pianist stepping onto a Carnegie Hall stage.

Beside me, dressed in a sharp, bespoke charcoal tux that miraculously fit his broad shoulders, walked Ethan Cole, playing the role of my high-powered legal counsel and escort.

Gasps rippled through the crowd. Whispers erupted like a swarm of angry hornets.

Grant froze mid-sentence while speaking to the city’s mayor. His face drained of all color, his eyes bulging as he stared at me across the crowded room. Margaret dropped her champagne flute; it shattered against the marble floor with a sharp, echoing crack.

"Claire," Grant choked out, abandoning the mayor and marching across the room toward us, his expression twisted in a mask of manic fury. "What the hell are you doing here? Security! Get these people out—"

"Don't touch me, Grant," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom, amplified by the acoustics of the vaulted ceiling.

Ethan stepped smoothly in front of me, blocking Grant’s advance with a cold, immovable stare. "I wouldn't do that, Mr. Mercer. Unless you want a very public demonstration of assault added to your growing list of charges."

"Who the hell are you?" Grant snarled, his face purple with rage.

Before Grant could summon security, Ethan pulled a small flash drive from his pocket and held it up for the entire room to see.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Ethan’s deep, resonant voice echoed through the ballroom's sound system—he had subtly patched into the DJ's microphone receiver. "Good evening. We are here to celebrate success. But before Mr. Mercer unveils his grand new real estate empire, I think it’s only fair that Cincinnati knows *how* he built it."

Margaret pushed her way through the crowd, her face a mask of aristocratic venom. "This is a private event! Guards, throw these lunatics out!"

"I wouldn't do that, Mrs. Mercer," I said, stepping forward, locking my eyes onto the woman who had helped steal my child. "Unless you want every reporter in this room to see the hospital registry tampering logs from five years ago."

The color drained from Margaret’s face. She stumbled backward, catching herself against a pillar.

On the massive LED screen behind the stage—where Grant’s corporate presentation was supposed to be displayed—the screen suddenly flickered.

The corporate logo vanished.

In its place, a birth certificate appeared in glowing 40-foot letters.

*Child: Baby Boy Mercer-Cross.*

*Mother: Dr. Evelyn Cross.*

*Father: Grant Mercer.*

*Date: December 31, Five Years Ago.*

The entire ballroom erupted into absolute chaos. Cameras flashed. Reporters scrambled for their notepads. Evelyn Cross screamed, turning and bolting toward the exit, while Grant stood paralyzed beneath the glowing proof of his monstrous deceit.
