Chapter 3 - The Morning Audit

The morning sun broke over Blackwood Bluff in brilliant, blinding shafts of gold, illuminating the crashing white surf below the cliffs.

By eight o'clock, the private boardroom on the third floor of the estate was operating at peak capacity. Six forensic corporate litigators, two senior partners from Sullivan & Cromwell, and Detective Raymond Callahan of the State Police Major Crimes Task Force sat around a massive U-shaped mahogany table, surrounded by stacks of unsealed financial audits and banking transcripts.

I sat at the head of the table beside Matthew, dressed in a tailored navy three-piece power suit Mrs. Gable had procured for me from the city at dawn. My hair was pulled back into a sharp, severe chignon, the bruise on my cheek lightly concealed, my posture radiating the unyielding authority of a woman who had finally stepped into her birthright.

Detective Callahan placed an evidence bag on the table containing a digital voice recorder and a set of encrypted flash drives.

"We executed a preliminary preservation warrant on Arthur Ambrose’s private residence in Greenwich at 6:00 AM, Miss Vance," Detective Callahan reported. "Ambrose is currently in federal holding. When our tactical team breached his study, we recovered the signed purchase agreement Isabel had drafted for last night."

Callahan clicked a key on his tablet, projecting the document onto the seventy-foot wall display.

"The agreement states that in exchange for a twelve-million-dollar equity infusion to satisfy Carranza Trust debts, Isabel Vargas would deliver seventy-five percent of the Vance telemetry patents and execute an irrevocable medical power-of-attorney assignment transferring guardianship of Elena Vance to Arthur Ambrose."

A collective, disgusted murmur swept through the corporate attorneys.

"That constitutes Federal Human Trafficking, Corporate Forgery, and Extortion under RICO statutes," Frank Sterling, Matthew's chief litigation counsel, stated firmly. "Furthermore, our banking audits have uncovered the money trail linking Isabel's offshore accounts in Panama to thirty-two cash payments made to Dr. Calvin Rusk—the physician who signed Marcus Vance's fraudulent death certificate in 2022."

Matthew turned to me, his presence an immovable mountain of steel and protection.

"The board of directors of Vargas Logistics has convened an emergency plenary session for eleven o'clock this morning at the corporate headquarters on LaSalle Street," Matthew said. "Isabel has called the meeting to announce the Ambrose acquisition and declare you legally missing and incapacitated."

I looked at the certified stock certificates bearing my father's original signature, feeling every ounce of fear, grief, and hesitation burn away into pure, indestructible iron.

"Call the private security convoy, Matthew," I commanded, my voice resonant and razor-sharp. "It’s time to show my stepmother who owns the foundation she’s standing on."
