Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

At 10:45 AM, the thirty-fourth floor of the Vargas Logistics Financial Tower in downtown Chicago was surrounded by private security operatives and executive compliance officers from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The grand thirty-seat boardroom, wrapped in curved architectural glass with panoramic views of the skyline, was packed with the twelve members of the board of directors, six corporate litigators, and prominent high-society investors.

Isabel Vargas stood at the head of the long obsidian table, dressed in an immaculate cream silk pantsuit, her diamond necklace glittering under the chandeliers. Her face was expertly made up, hiding any trace of the previous night's pursuit, radiating the triumphant, untouchable arrogance of a woman about to claim absolute victory.

"Gentlemen, fellow directors," Isabel announced, her voice carrying its practiced, charming cadence. "I thank you for assembling on such short notice. Today marks a historic new chapter for this company. As many of you know, my late husband's daughter, Elena, has unfortunately suffered a severe, chronic psychiatric decline that culminated in a tragic domestic breakdown last night. For her own safety, she has been placed under private medical care."

She pulled a leather folio from her briefcase, laying it on the table.

"Under the emergency provisions of the family estate, I am executing the transfer of our telemetry patents to the Ambrose Investment Group, securing twenty-five million dollars in immediate liquidity."

"The only thing you are executing this morning, Isabel," a clear, cold voice rang out from the double mahogany entrance doors, "is your own public confession."

Every single head in the room snapped toward the entrance.

The double doors swung open with concussive force.

I walked down the grand center aisle of the boardroom.

I did not look like a broken girl who had crawled through muddy woods in the rain. I walked with the measured, lethal grace of a sovereign heir, my navy suit pressed to perfection, my dark eyes locking onto Isabel with an intensity that sucked the air out of the room.

Walking at my left flank was Matthew Carranza, his imposing six-foot-two frame radiating cold, unassailable power, flanked by Detective Raymond Callahan and six armed federal marshals in tactical dress.

Isabel’s face drained of every single drop of color. She staggered back two paces, her manicured hands clutching the edge of the obsidian table as if the floor had dropped out from beneath her heels.

"Elena...?" Isabel choked out, her voice cracking into a high-pitched, manic squeak. "You... you were supposed to be..."

"Supposed to be locked in a bedroom with Arthur Ambrose?" I finished for her, stepping to the head of the table.

I dropped a heavy steel briefcase onto the polished wood, popping the latches open with two concussive, metallic snaps.

"Arthur Ambrose was arrested by federal marshals in Greenwich five hours ago, Isabel," I announced to the breathless room. "And Dr. Calvin Rusk just signed a full video confession in federal custody, detailing the digitalis poisoning of my father, Marcus Vance."
