Chapter 5 - The War Council at Dawn

By 6:00 AM, the rain had ceased, leaving behind a crisp, crystalline sunrise that bathed the estate’s sweeping lawns in pale silver and gold.
The private executive study on the third floor was operating under maximum tactical lockdown.
Six sixty-inch high-definition monitors illuminated the room in a cold, blue-tinted glow, displaying the maritime logistics grids of the Port of New York and New Jersey, live federal court registries, and the decrypted corporate accounts of Apex Atlantic Logistics.
Dominic sat behind his massive mahogany desk, dressed in an open-collared white shirt and dark trousers, his overcoat discarded, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms.
Sitting across from him was Frank Callahan, his chief corporate trial counsel, alongside Special Agent Raymond Callahan of the FBI’s Organized Crime Strike Force.
I sat at the end of the conference table, holding a mug of fresh roast coffee, dressed in a warm cream cashmere sweater and dark wool trousers Mrs. Ferrara had laid out for me. Lily was downstairs in the sunlit breakfast solarium, happily eating blueberry pancakes with Chef Rosa and playing with Barnaby, Dominic's massive, gentle golden retriever.
"David Hayes’s audit ledger is absolute dynamite, Dominic," Frank Callahan announced, tapping his mechanical keyboard. "The entries from 2023 prove that Marcus Cole executed a sixty-million-dollar phantom billing scheme through the Red Hook container terminals, utilizing forged bills of lading stamped with your late father's signature."
Frank projected the digitized pages of David's blue notebook onto the central monitor.
"Cole wasn't just laundering money," Special Agent Raymond Callahan added, his voice grim. "He was funneling four million dollars a month into private shell accounts in Zurich to finance a hostile corporate takeover of the Moretti shipping terminals. When David Hayes discovered the routing keys, Cole ordered his medical benefits terminated, knowing David's leukemia treatments would bankrupt the family and force them into silence."
Dominic’s jaw set like iron. A terrifying stillness settled over his features.
"And last night," Dominic said, each syllable sharp as broken glass, "Cole sent an armed crew to execute David's widow and five-year-old daughter to recover this notebook."
Special Agent Callahan stood up, pulling a leather-bound folder from his briefcase.
"Chief District Judge Evelyn Montgomery has already reviewed the digitized ledgers and the captured operative's confession, Dominic," Agent Callahan reported. "The Department of Justice has unsealed a forty-six-count federal indictment against Marcus Cole and his executive board for Corporate Extortion, Depraved Heart Manslaughter, Grand Larceny, and Racketeering under the RICO Act."
Dominic rose slowly to his full six-foot-two height.

He looked at me across the table, his slate-gray eyes holding an unshakeable, sovereign authority.
"Cole is hosting his annual maritime logistics conference at the Manhattan Yacht Club at noon today," Dominic said softly. "He thinks he owns the waterfront. Let's go show him who commands the tide."
