Chapter 7 - The Fall of Marcus Cole

Frank Callahan stepped forward, slamming three thick certified volumes of federal indictments onto the front press table with a concussive thud that rattled the champagne flutes.

"Under emergency seizure warrants executed by Chief District Judge Evelyn Montgomery at dawn," Frank announced, his voice cutting through the silent hall like a tempered broadsword, "Marcus Cole and his executive committee are under federal arrest for Federal Racketeering, Murder-for-Hire, Grand Maritime Larceny exceeding eighty million dollars, and Depraved Heart Manslaughter in the death of David Hayes."

Frank connected his tablet to the ballroom's seventy-foot digital presentation wall.

The massive screens illuminated instantly in four-K clarity:

First came the high-resolution scans of David Hayes's blue audit ledger, proving that Cole had forged the elder Moretti's signature on sixty million dollars of illicit container billing; next came the surveillance footage from 44th Street showing Cole's operative breaking into Clara's apartment with a crowbar; and finally, the encrypted audio wiretaps where Cole explicitly ordered the destruction of David's family to protect the Red Hook merger.

The ballroom erupted into deafening, chaotic outrage.

Port commissioners and shipping directors jumped to their feet in open revulsion, shouting curses at Marcus Cole, shoving their chairs back to put distance between themselves and the fallen titan.

Cole panicked. He lunged toward the private service exit behind the stage, but Enzo Rossi stepped from the velvet curtains, driving an iron palm into Cole’s chest, dropping the billionaire flat onto his back on the hardwood floor with effortless, bone-rattling force.

Cole scrambled on his hands and knees, hyperventilating, his expensive veneer completely pulverized into dust.

"Dominic... listen to me!" Cole wept, his hands coming up in a desperate, frantic plea. "Your father was choking the waterfront! I did what was necessary to modernize the ports! I’ll pay the Hayes estate twenty million dollars! Cash! Today!"

Dominic walked slowly onto the stage, stopping twelve inches from where Cole knelt in pathetic ruin.

"You let an honest man die of cancer to cover your theft, Marcus," Dominic whispered, his voice dropping into sub-zero granite. "You left a young mother to scrub floors to pay medical bills you created. And you sent animals to terrorize a five-year-old child."

Dominic reached down, picked up Cole’s designer signet ring from where it had slipped onto the floor, and crushed the gold band between his calloused fingers until the diamond cracked.

"Your name is erased from this water forever, Marcus."

Four federal marshals stepped forward, clicking heavy steel transport chains around Cole’s wrists and ankles, dragging the screaming, sniveling predator down the center aisle as the entire room watched in stony, condemning silence.
