Chapter 9 - The David Hayes Memorial Terminal

By early autumn, the grand opening of the newly reconstructed David Hayes Memorial Container Terminal was celebrated at the Red Hook docks in Brooklyn.

The historic sixty-acre waterfront facility—the very land Marcus Cole had attempted to seize through extortion—was now home to the most advanced automated, zero-emission commercial container port and maritime technical institute in North America.

The modern facility featured a public children's library, free pediatric and occupational health clinics for longshoremen's families, advanced robotic crane simulator suites, and an expansive public park overlooking New York Harbor.

Thousands of dockworkers, maritime engineers, civic leaders, community organizers, and healthcare workers from St. Catherine’s gathered on the wide public plaza to celebrate the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

In the center of the park stood a magnificent life-sized bronze monument depicting David Hayes in his working uniform, holding an architectural blueprint toward the morning sun, while a little girl held hands with a tall protector beside him.

Beside the statue, a polished granite plaque was inscribed with gold lettering:

THE SOVEREIGN AUDIT “An empire is not measured by the ships it commands or the fear it projects, but by the honor with which it remembers its fallen workers, and the sanctuary it builds to protect their children.” Dedicated to David Hayes, Clara Hayes Moretti, and Lily Hayes.

Dominic and I stood on the outdoor stage holding hands, while five-year-old Lily stood proudly between us, wearing an elegant blue velvet dress and holding the ceremonial gold ribbon shears together with her mother.

Dominic stepped up to the microphone, his deep baritone carrying clear and steady across the harbor:

"For years, my world was governed under the cold calculation of suspicion, believing that power was maintained through walls, locks, and fear," Dominic addressed the cheering crowd. "We were wrong. True power is found only in the courage of the truth, the dignity of the working hands that carry our lives, and the love that turns an empty house into a real family. Today, we dedicate this harbor forever to our working families, and to the truth that justice and loyalty will always conquer the dark."

The crowd erupted into thunderous, standing applause as Lily cut the ceremonial red ribbon with a single, joyful snip.

Ship horns roared across New York Harbor, fireboats shot towering arcs of water into the sunny sky, and thousands of voices rose in a united cheer that shook the very foundations of the docks.
