Chapter 7 - The Trap Closes

"Freeze! Drop it!"

A masked operative in tactical gear burst through the cellar doorway at the top of the stairs, leveling an MP5 submachine gun directly at Noah’s chest. A second operative flanked him, covering Sterling and Victoria with lethal precision.

Sterling didn't hesitate. He raised his Sig Sauer and fired a single warning shot into the wooden ceiling joist above the operatives' heads, sending a shower of splintered wood raining down upon them.

"Drop your weapons or the next one goes through your vest!" Sterling roared, his voice echoing with the terrifying authority of a man who had nothing left to lose.

The operatives hesitated, caught off guard by the aggressive counter-attack.

"Now! Move!" Noah yelled, shoving Victoria toward the open cellar door leading out into the rear snowbanks.

They scrambled out of the dark cellar into the blinding white light of the snowy woods, sprinting blindly through the pine trees as shouts and the dull pop of a suppressed pistol echoed behind them. Bullets snapped through the frozen branches overhead, showering them with icy powder.

They broke through the tree line just as the Ford Expedition came roaring around the corner of the logging road, tires spinning furiously in the snow.

Sterling threw open the passenger door, shoving Victoria inside, while Noah leaped into the backseat, clutching the leather ledger tightly to his chest like a shield.

The driver slammed his foot on the gas, the SUV fishtailing wildly before launching down the icy trail just as three Vanguard operatives emerged from the tree line, firing futilely at the retreating vehicle.

Inside the bouncing SUV, Noah exhaled a ragged breath, looking down at the heavy ledger in his hands. He flipped open the cover. Inside, page after page detailed the exact mathematical calculations, falsified stress thresholds, and original signatures of Arthur Vance and Julian Sterling, outlining a deliberate conspiracy to ignore fatal structural flaws in exchange for multi-million-dollar government subsidies.

"We have it," Victoria whispered, tears of relief welling in her eyes. "We actually have it."

"We don't just have it," Sterling said, gripping the steering wheel as he navigated the treacherous curves of the mountain road. "We’re going to deliver it directly to the federal aviation prosecutor in Chicago before Arthur Vance even knows his team failed."
