Chapter 8 - The Federal Courthouse

Twenty-four hours later, the federal courthouse in downtown Chicago stood beneath a towering crown of gray winter clouds.

Inside the third-floor conference room of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois, the atmosphere was thick with the rustle of legal briefs and the quiet clicking of laptop keyboards.

Seated at the long oak conference table was Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Callahan, flanked by two federal investigators. Across the table sat Richard Sterling, Victoria Vance, and Noah Parker, the heavy leather ledger resting in the center of the table like a holy relic.

Callahan closed the ledger, took off his reading glasses, and looked up at Sterling with an expression of profound gravity.

"Mr. Sterling, these documents... combined with the forensic audit of the sabotaged helicopter tail rotor and the wiretapped shell company records linking Vanguard Aerospace to the tracking beacon... this is an airtight racketeering and corporate homicide case."

"It’s more than a racketeering case, Mr. Callahan," Sterling said, his voice steady and unyielding. "It’s an institutional confession. Every single person who signed those pages—including myself, through my past negligence—must submit to a full federal review. But the primary architects of the 1998 cover-up, Arthur Vance and his executive cabal, must be arrested immediately before they attempt to flee the jurisdiction."

"Warrants have already been signed by the federal magistrate judge," Callahan announced, standing up and opening the door to the outer hallway. "U.S. Marshals are executing the seizure orders at Vanguard Aerospace headquarters right now."

On the wall-mounted television screen in the corner of the room, a breaking news banner flashed across the local news broadcast:

BREAKING: FEDERAL AGENTS RAID VANGUARD AEROSPACE HEADQUARTERS; CHAIRMAN ARTHUR VANCE DETAINED AMID FRAUD INVESTIGATION.

Noah stared at the screen, watching as federal agents led an aging, handcuffed Arthur Vance out of the glass-fronted corporate tower through a sea of flashing camera lights.

The man who had ordered the murder of Michael Carter twenty-eight years ago was finally facing the unyielding weight of justice.

Victoria reached across the table, gently placing her hand over Noah’s scarred knuckles. "Your father can finally rest," she whispered softly.

Noah looked down at her hand, a slow, profound peace washing over him for the first time in his life. The war his father had fought in the shadows was finally over.
