Chapter 5 - The Fall of Marcus Vance

Three miles away from the gleaming glass tower, miles from the corporate boardrooms and executive suites, Marcus Vance sat on a cracked vinyl stool inside a greasy, neon-lit diner off the interstate.

He wore the same wrinkled polyester suit, his tie crooked, his eyes bloodshot and hollow. On the counter before him sat a lukewarm cup of bitter black coffee and an unopened envelope containing his final, prorated termination check from AeroClean—a fraction of what he was owed, slashed by administrative penalties.

His phone buzzed on the counter. He picked it up with a trembling hand.

It was a notification from the state unemployment board: Claim denied due to termination for gross workplace misconduct and regulatory compliance violations.

Marcus stared at the glowing screen, his vision blurring with a mixture of bitter rage and overwhelming despair. He tried calling his former regional vice president, but the number went straight to a disconnected carrier tone. He tried messaging three different contacts in airport management; every single one had blocked his number.

The empire he had built on petty tyranny, intimidation, and the dehumanization of hourly workers had collapsed into dust in less than twelve hours.

He had thought power came from a clipboard, a title, and the authority to crush people who couldn't fight back. He was learning, too late, that power built on cruelty is nothing more than a house of cards waiting for the slightest breath of wind to blow it into oblivion.

Marcus dropped his head into his hands, the harsh neon lights buzzing overhead as he sat completely alone in the damp, unforgiving morning air.
