Chapter 6 - The Return to Gate C18

Back at O'Hare International Airport, the noon rush was transforming Terminal 3 into a bustling symphony of international travel.

Flight announcements echoed rhythmically across the P.A. system, families rushed toward their boarding gates, and businessmen hurried past with rolling briefcases. But the atmosphere was fundamentally altered.

Near Gate C18, the old concrete pillar where Harold Grant had nearly collapsed now stood beside a newly installed, state-of-the-art automated assistance station—a gleaming kiosk equipped with video interpreters, accessibility wheelchairs, emergency medical links, and a permanent supply of fresh bottled water available free of charge to any traveler in need.

Overseeing the installation of the kiosk was Ethan Cole.

He wore his tailored charcoal suit, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms as he helped a technician secure the digital display panel.

A young cleaner pushing a gray plastic utility cart walked past, pausing for a moment to stare at the sleek new installation with wide, curious eyes. The kid looked exhausted, his shoulders slumped beneath an oversized polo shirt, his sneakers scuffed at the toes.

Ethan noticed him. He straightened up, wiped his hands on a clean cloth, and walked over with a warm, approachable smile.

"Hey," Ethan said softly.

The kid blinked, clutching the handle of his cart. "Hey. Are we allowed to stop here? Supervisor said—"

"Your supervisor told you to keep moving, but I'm telling you it's okay to take a breath," Ethan interrupted gently, handing the young worker an unopened bottle of water from the new kiosk. "Drink some water. And if anyone gives you a hard time for checking on a passenger... tell them to call my office on the sixty-fifth floor."

The kid stared at the bottle, then up at Ethan’s executive lapel pin. A slow, relieved smile spread across his face. "Thanks, man. Really."

Ethan nodded, watching the worker push his cart down the concourse with a slightly lighter step.

The wheel kept turning. The airport kept moving. But the floor beneath them was finally solid rock.
