Chapter 8 - The Corner Office

Later that afternoon, back in his corner office on the sixty-fifth floor of the Grant Global Tower, Ethan sat at his massive walnut desk reviewing the quarterly community grant allocations.

The sun was beginning to dip below the western horizon, casting long, golden ribbons of amber light across the skyscrapers of downtown Chicago.

The heavy oak door clicked open, and Harold Grant stepped into the room, leaning lightly on a polished cane, holding two paper cups of dark roast coffee from the ground-floor lobby.

"Working late, Director Cole?" Harold teased gently, setting one of the cups on Ethan’s desk before taking a seat in the leather guest chair.

"Just reviewing the regional expansion metrics for the new airport welfare kiosks, Founder," Ethan smiled, taking a sip of the coffee. "We're launching in Atlanta and Dallas next month."

Harold nodded, looking out the panoramic window at the sprawling metropolis below. "Your father would have been very proud of you, Ethan. You took a broken system and reminded it how to breathe."

"I only did what you taught me to do by sitting on that floor, sir," Ethan replied softly.

"No," Harold corrected, turning his gaze back to the young man. "I only gave you the opportunity. You were the one who had the courage to step out of line."

They sat in comfortable, peaceful silence for several minutes, watching the city lights begin to flicker on across the vast urban landscape—a million tiny points of light, each representing a life, a struggle, and a home.

The foundation was set. The doors were wide open. And nothing in this world could ever shake it down.
