Chapter 2 - The Silent Perimeter

At 6:30 AM, I returned to the presidential suite.

Diane was still sleeping on the master bed. The bottle of mineral water on her nightstand remained untouched.

I walked into the dressing room, took my time showering, and dressed in a tailored charcoal cashmere sweater, dark trousers, and leather boots. I packed my jewelry, my private passport, and my corporate credentials into my black leather tote.

I did not pack the wedding dress. I left it hanging on the exterior wardrobe door—a sixty-thousand-dollar monument to a fiction that had ceased to exist.

My phone chimed with a private encrypted text from Marcus Vance, Sentinel Arc’s Chief of Global Security and a former senior operative with the Defense Information Systems Agency.

Marcus: "The forensic extraction is verified. All four video files, the device MAC address, and the cellular IP transmission logs are secured on our off-grid servers in Zurich. Three tactical surveillance units are on-site at the Bellweather. Awaiting your instruction, Chairman."

I typed a single response: “Deploy the grid. Isolate Nolan Whitmore’s room. Nobody leaves the hotel.”

I stepped out of the suite into the grand fourth-floor hallway.

Standing at the end of the carpeted corridor, leaning against the mahogany wainscoting with a cup of takeout coffee in his hand, was Nolan Whitmore.

He was twenty-eight years old, thinner than Eric, with the same sharp blue eyes and narrow jawline, but his posture carried none of his brother’s easy, polished confidence. He wore wrinkled linen trousers and an unbuttoned dress shirt from the night before, his face pale, dark circles bruising the skin beneath his eyes.

When he saw me walking toward him carrying my tote bag, his hand jerked, coffee sloshing over the plastic lid.

"Claire," Nolan gasped, his voice raspy and tight. "You're... you're up early."

I stopped four feet from him. My hands remained resting comfortably inside the pockets of my trench coat.

"Good morning, Nolan," I said, my voice smooth and pleasant. "Did you sleep well in your room?"

Nolan swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing violently. He didn't look at my eyes; his gaze darted nervously to the elevators, then back to my face.

"Yeah. Fine. Eric was on the pull-out sofa," Nolan stammered. "How’s... how’s Mom? Is she still feeling sick?"

"Your mother is resting comfortably," I replied, taking one slow, deliberate step closer. "She had a very exhausting afternoon yesterday, setting up the bridal suite."

Nolan’s breath hitched. The paper coffee cup in his hand began to tremble, the lid clicking against the rim.

"What do you mean?" he whispered.

I reached into my pocket, pulled out the flesh-colored strip of medical adhesive with the empty micro-lens housing, and held it between two fingers directly in front of his face.

Nolan went so pale he looked like a corpse standing on the hotel runner.

"You were scheduled for 1:00 AM, weren't you, Nolan?" I said, my voice dropping into a register of icy, absolute stillness. "To use my unconscious thumbprint to transfer fifty-one percent of my company’s voting shares to your family trust."

Nolan dropped his coffee.

The cup hit the plush carpet with a dull thud, dark liquid spreading into the fibers around his leather loafers. He backed against the wall, his chest heaving, his hands coming up in a frantic, defensive gesture.

"Claire... please," Nolan choked out, tears of sheer, unvarnished panic filling his eyes. "I didn't want to do it! Eric told me the family was going bankrupt! He said the private equity lenders were going to seize our house in Beaufort! Mom told me if I didn't help, they would cut me out of the estate!"

The elevator doors at the end of the hall dinged with a clear, chime tone.

Two men in tailored dark suits and discrete communication earpieces stepped out of the cab, followed by Detective Frank Callahan of the Charleston Police Department’s Special Investigations Bureau.

"Mr. Nolan Whitmore," Detective Callahan said, walking toward him with an unsealed state search warrant in his hand. "Step away from the wall and keep your hands visible. We have a few questions regarding a coordinated corporate extortion and wiretap conspiracy."
