Chapter 9 - The Eleanor Bennett Sanctuary
By early spring, the transformation of the Beaufort waterfront estate was complete.
The heavy, pretentious wrought-iron gates that had guarded the Whitmore compound for three generations were dismantled and melted down, replaced by an open, sunlit entrance constructed of local fieldstone and native cedar.
The sixty acres of coastal maritime forest were officially dedicated as The Eleanor Bennett Marine Sanctuary and Technology Commons.
On a warm Saturday morning in April, hundreds of local residents, marine biologists, university students, and community leaders gathered on the sweeping lawns overlooking the blue waters of Port Royal Sound to celebrate the grand opening.
The historic antebellum manor house had been completely remodeled.
The dark mahogany panels and pretentious portraits of the Whitmore ancestors were gone, replaced by soaring architectural glass walls, collaborative research laboratories, high-speed fiber workstations, and an open-air rooftop terrace overlooking the salt marshes.
I stood at the outdoor podium in a simple, elegant emerald linen dress, looking out at the crowd with deep, quiet pride.
Beside me on the platform sat my parents, Ava, and the newly appointed director of the conservation trust, Dr. Sarah Vance.
"For generations, we are told that legacy is measured by the names we inherit, the gates we lock, and the wealth we hoard in the dark," I addressed the audience, my voice ringing clear and steady in the sea breeze.
