Chapter 3 - The Detail on the Glass

At 4:00 a.m., Alessandro sat in the private hospital conference room, surrounded by six wall-mounted monitors displaying high-definition 4K security feeds extracted from Il Cielo's mainframe.

Marco Rossi sat at the control console beside Arthur Ross, the Moretti family's chief corporate litigator.

"Play the service corridor footage at 9:14 p.m.," Alessandro commanded, his voice cold as arctic sleet.

The screen illuminated with the rear hallway connecting the private dining suites to the kitchen prep stations.

At 09:14:22 PM, a woman appeared on the screen wearing a floor-length crimson silk evening gown with an open back and red stilettos—a dress nearly identical to the one Clara was wearing that evening.

"Look at the gait, Alessandro," Marco pointed out, freezing the frame. "She has her back turned to the camera, wearing a dark brunette wig styled in the exact same chignon as Miss Clara. To any casual observer in the dining room, it looked like Clara was walking to the service station."

"Zoom in on her left hand as she hands the envelope to the sous-chef," Arthur Ross instructed.

The digital resolution sharpened.

The woman’s hand extended toward the kitchen staff member, passing a thick manila envelope of cash and a small amber glass vial.

On her left wrist was a heavy platinum tennis bracelet set with alternating diamonds and square-cut rubies.

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure, calculating death.

"That bracelet belongs to Bianca Sterling," Alessandro whispered. "Julian Sterling’s sister."

"And look at the timing, Alessandro," Arthur Ross said, pulling up an unsealed legal dossier. "Three days ago, Julian Sterling filed an emergency petition with the State Maritime Commerce Commission to challenge Moretti Maritime's exclusive thirty-year deepwater lease at the Port of Newark."

Arthur tapped the tablet, displaying an encrypted transaction ledger:

OPERATION: RED TOAST // TARGET: ALESSANDRO MORETTI

PRIMARY STRATEGY: ADMINISTER LETHAL ACONITINE INFUSION VIA PRIVATE ANNIVERSARY DESSERT.

FRAME PROTOCOL: STAGE SURVEILLANCE OF CLARA MARCHETTI-VANCE DELIVERING TOXIN IN A RED DRESS // CLAIM SPITE AND EXTORTION FOLLOWING PRENUPTIAL DISPUTE.

OUTCOME: ALESSANDRO MORETTI DECEASED // CLARA ARRESTED FOR CAPITAL MURDER // MORETTI MARITIME PLACED UNDER STERLING JUDICIAL RECEIVERSHIP.

The entire monstrous architecture of the plot lay bare.

Julian and Bianca Sterling had not merely intended to assassinate Alessandro.

They had deliberately staged a lookalike in Clara’s exact red dress to ensure that when Alessandro died at Table Seven, the security footage would convict Clara of premeditated spousal murder.

With Alessandro dead and Clara facing life imprisonment or execution, the Sterling family would have executed an emergency judicial takeover of the seventy-million-dollar Newark terminals before sunrise on Monday.

And when little Emma warned Alessandro that "the lady in the red dress put something in your cake," Alessandro had assumed the child was talking about Clara.

He had switched the plates to test his fiancée's loyalty—and had nearly murdered the only woman who held his soul.

Alessandro stood up slowly.

He reached into his breast pocket, pulling out his heavy Kimber .45, checking the chamber with a sharp, mechanical clack.

"Marco," Alessandro said softly.

"Bring the sous-chef to the basement of Pier Fourteen. Have our tactical units surround the Sterling estate in Old Westbury. And wake up the United States Attorney."
