Chapter 5 - The Awakening and the Score

At 7:15 a.m. on Sunday, the pale morning sun broke through the heavy autumn clouds over Manhattan, casting a soft, golden warmth across Room 1004.
The ventilator had been removed three hours earlier.
My eyelids fluttered open.
The sterile smell of hospital antiseptic filled my throat, accompanied by the dry, metallic taste of medicine. My chest ached with a dull, bruised soreness, but the air moved freely into my lungs.
I turned my head slowly to the right.
Alessandro was sitting on the edge of the hospital mattress, his head bowed, his large, calloused hands gripping mine with an intensity that felt like a lifeline.
When he felt my fingers move within his grasp, his head snapped up.
The fearsome don of New York—the man who had never shown weakness to any enemy—had tears streaming openly down his weathered, exhaustion-lined face.
"Clara..." Alessandro choked out, his voice cracking into a ragged, broken whisper.
I tried to speak, but my throat was parched. "Alessandro..."
He immediately reached for a cup of water, gently holding the straw to my lips as he supported my shoulders with his arm.
When I finished, I looked into his bloodshot eyes. "What happened at the restaurant? The dessert..."
Alessandro dropped from the bed onto both knees on the cold linoleum floor.
He buried his face against the edge of the mattress, his shoulders heaving with a deep, agonizing sob that shook his entire six-foot-three frame.
"I switched the plates, Clara," Alessandro wept, confessing his sin into the cotton sheets. "A homeless child ran into the dining room and told me that a woman in a red dress had put something in my cake. I was suspicious... I thought you might have been compromised by our enemies... I switched the soufflés to test the truth."
He lifted his head, looking up at me with raw, absolute agony.
"My arrogance nearly murdered the only person in this world I was born to protect," he whispered. "If you want to leave me, if you want me to put a gun to my own head, say the word. But please... know that I will spend every breath I have left burning down the people who did this to you."
I looked down at the powerful man kneeling in total surrender at my feet.
I reached out with my trembling hand, threading my fingers through his dark, thick hair, pulling his forehead gently against my palm.
"Stand up, Alessandro," I whispered softly.
He slowly rose, his gray eyes searching mine in disbelief.
"You didn't poison me, Alessandro," I said, my voice gaining strength. "The wolves did. Did you find my anniversary gift?"
May you like
Alessandro reached into his overcoat, pulling out the dark green box. He opened the lid, revealing the antique, hand-inked musical score from Palermo, untouched and pristine.
"I found it, my love," Alessandro whispered, placing his gold signet ring over my finger. "And today, we play the final movement."
