Chapter 4 - The Hunt on Pier Fourteen

The damp, freezing fog rolling off New York Harbor clung to the rusted iron girders of Pier Fourteen in Brooklyn.

Inside the soundproofed sub-level of the abandoned maritime warehouse, rain dripped rhythmically into metal buckets, the air thick with the smell of diesel, salt water, and cold dread.

Tied to a heavy steel chair beneath a single swinging halogen bulb was Henri Laurent—the thirty-four-year-old French pastry chef from Il Cielo. His chef’s whites were torn, his face pale as lard, sweating profusely as Marco Rossi stood behind him with his arms crossed.

The heavy iron door groaned open on rusted hinges.

Alessandro Moretti walked into the warehouse.

He wore an immaculate charcoal wool three-piece suit beneath a heavy dark overcoat, his leather dress boots clicking with slow, deliberate cadence against the concrete floor.

He stopped two paces from the trembling chef.

Alessandro did not shout. He did not draw a weapon. He simply pulled up a folding wooden chair, sat down directly in front of Laurent, and looked into his eyes.

"You took two hundred thousand dollars from Bianca Sterling at nine-fourteen on Thursday evening, Henri," Alessandro said, his baritone quiet and terrifyingly calm.

Laurent gasped, his teeth chattering against his lower lip. "Monsieur Moretti... please! I have a family in Lyon! They told me it was a harmless paralytic—an extract to induce temporary food poisoning so the health department would shut down the restaurant for an audit! I swear on my mother's soul, I didn't know it was lethal poison!"

Alessandro reached into his pocket and placed the small amber glass vial recovered from the kitchen trash onto Laurent’s knee.

"Aconitine-7 shuts down the cardiac sodium channels within six minutes, Henri," Alessandro whispered, leaning forward until his face was six inches from the chef’s. "The woman who ate that soufflé is currently on life support at Presbyterian."

Laurent let out a dry, broken sob, shaking his head frantically. "They promised me a flight to Geneva at dawn! Julian Sterling’s private driver delivered the cash and the passport to my apartment in Queens! The bag is still under my bed!"

Marco stepped forward, holding an encrypted satellite phone. "Our team just secured the bag at his apartment, boss. We have the cash, the Swiss bank routing slips, and the recorded audio messages from Bianca Sterling’s personal burner phone."

Alessandro slowly stood up.

He looked down at the weeping chef.

"Give the evidence to Special Agent Sarah Lin of the FBI," Alessandro commanded Marco. "And tell the Port Authority Police that Monsieur Laurent will be testifying as the state's primary witness at the federal grand jury at eight o'clock sharp."
