Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

Dawn broke over Lake Michigan in shades of bruised pewter and gold.
Inside the penthouse atelier, Elena pulled the final thread tight, executed a blind micro-knot beneath the inner facing, and snipped the silk strand with her mother’s silver scissors.
She stepped back, swaying slightly from exhaustion.
The *Midnight Iris* hung from a velvet-padded dress form under the daylight lamp. The jagged, gaping wound along the left waist had vanished. The violet silk flowed seamlessly into the crystal-encrusted hip drapery, maintaining its impossible, liquid silhouette. The repair was not merely invisible; it was molecularly perfect, matching the tension and rhythm of the surrounding handwork.
Lucas Cole, who had spent the last three hours watching her in absolute silence from the shadows of his leather armchair, stood up.
He walked over to the mannequin. He ran his hand down the flank of the dress. His fingertips felt for the seam, searching for a bump, an uneven pull, a stiffened knot. There was nothing. The silk yielded beneath his fingers like water.
"Incredible," he breathed, almost against his will.
Before Elena could respond, the private elevator chimed sharply. The doors slid open to reveal a man in his late forties wearing an immaculate bespoke dove-gray suit, carrying an ivory leather folder. His silver-streaked hair was styled with surgical precision, but his eyes carried the erratic jitter of a man running on pure adrenaline.
It was Julian Sterling.
"Lucas!" Julian proclaimed, hurrying into the penthouse with theatrical urgency. "Thank God you're awake. I've been frantic all night. The security team at the ballroom told me—"
Julian stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes fell upon the purple gown standing proudly on the mannequin. Then, his gaze flicked to Elena, standing in her wrinkled gray housekeeping uniform, her mother’s silver needle still gleaming between her thumb and forefinger.
The color instantly drained from Julian’s face.
"What is... what is that doing here?" Julian stammered, pointing at the dress. "And who is this woman? Lucas, this is a severe breach of protocol! Housekeeping is not permitted—"
"Julian," Lucas interrupted, his voice dropping into a register that made the hair on the back of Elena’s neck stand up. "Tell me again how this dress was destroyed last night."
Julian’s throat bobbed. He adjusted his silk necktie with a trembling hand. "As I told you at midnight... someone broke into the secure storage suite behind the ballroom. An act of pure sabotage by a rival house, undoubtedly. They slashed the waist with tailor’s shears and stole the archival notes. I was devastated! I ordered the staff to search every inch of the premises, but—"
"You didn't order a search," Elena said quietly, stepping forward.
Julian glared at her with venomous disgust. "Quiet! You have no standing to speak in this room, maid. Lucas, have security remove this trespasser immediately!"
"Let her speak," Lucas commanded.
Elena took a step toward Julian, holding up a small, clear plastic bag she had pulled from the trash alongside the dress. Inside was a shattered bronze cufflink bearing the engraved initials *J.S.*
"You didn't use shears, Mr. Sterling," Elena said, her voice ringing clear and steady in the vast room. "You were adjusting the display on the heavy industrial rolling rack yourself, trying to reposition the gown before the exhibition preview. Your cufflink caught the inner structural stay-stitch. You pulled too hard, and the bias seam tore open. You knew the exhibition opened tonight. You knew you couldn't fix it without revealing that you didn't understand how the internal balance-ribbon worked. So you threw it in the chute, planned to claim it was stolen by corporate spies, and write it off as an insurance loss."
Julian’s face twisted into an ugly mask of rage. "You insolent little cockroach! How dare you invent such ridiculous lies? Lucas, are you seriously listening to a thief? Look at her! She probably stole that cufflink from my dressing room! She's an opportunist trying to shake you down!"
"She fixed it, Julian," Lucas said, his voice dropping like an anvil.
Julian froze. "What?"
"She repaired the structural failure in less than four hours," Lucas said, stepping between Julian and Elena. "Without the original design schematics. Tell me, Julian... could you have done that?"
"Of course I could have!" Julian hissed, his arrogance cracking under panic. "I am the Creative Director of Cole House! I designed that dress alongside your mother!"
"Then explain to me," Lucas said, reaching out to gently flip open the inner hem of the gown, exposing the three tiny clover-shaped knot clusters, "why the signature maker's mark on the master prototype matches the family stitch of Elena Carter’s late mother, Rose Carter?"
Julian stepped back as if he had been slapped with a steel rod. His eyes darted toward the elevator, then back to Lucas, cold panic turning into cornered desperation.
"You're being manipulated, Lucas," Julian snarled, his voice dropping the polished facade. "Your mother was losing her mind toward the end. She was accepting outside sketches, buying ideas from nobody students off the street to keep the house relevant! I protected her legacy! I protected *your* fortune! If you drag this girl into the spotlight, you will destroy Cole House before the stock market opens on Monday!"
"Get out," Lucas said softly.
Julian blinked. "What?"
"Leave your keycard on the bar," Lucas said, his eyes black with cold fury. "You are suspended pending a full forensic audit of every collection registered under your name for the last nine years. And Julian... if you go near Elena Carter, or her sister, I will not wait for the courts to ruin you."
Julian stared at Lucas, trembling with rage. Then, he turned his toxic gaze onto Elena.
"You think you've won something, little girl?" Julian whispered venomously as he backed toward the elevator doors. "You think you can take back six years with a single needle? You have no idea the kind of wolves that run this industry. You just stepped into a meat grinder."
The elevator doors closed, sealing Julian away.
Elena let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for six years, her knees buckling beneath her. But before she could hit the floor, strong, warm hands caught her by the arms.
Lucas pulled her gently upright, holding her until her balance returned.
May you like
"You did it," he whispered, looking into her exhausted, hazel eyes. "Now, Elena... it’s time we take back everything he stole from you."
