Chapter 6 - The Saboteur’s Last Stand

The Cole Foundation Charity Gala was legendary in the Midwest.

The Grand Ballroom of the hotel had been transformed into an ethereal forest of white orchids, crystal chandeliers, and polished bronze mirrors. Five hundred guests—diplomats, Hollywood celebrities, high-fashion buyers, and international journalists—mingled over flutes of vintage champagne.

Elena stood backstage behind the grand velvet curtains of the runway, her hands cold despite the heat of the backstage spotlights.

Beside her, Sophie was carefully steaming the hem of a shimmering pearl-gray evening dress. Sophie had insisted on being part of the backstage team, her fierce sisterly loyalty translating into an unstoppable backstage coordinator.

"You look like you're going to faint," Sophie whispered, adjusting Elena’s emerald dress.

"I spent five years hiding in the service corridors, Soph," Elena murmured, listening to the swelling roar of the orchestra outside. "Now Lucas wants me to walk out there after the archival presentation."

"You belong out there," Sophie said firmly. "Mom spent her whole life making rich people look beautiful while remaining invisible in the dark. You are not going to be invisible anymore, Elena."

Before Elena could answer, the backstage lights flickered violently.

A muffled shout came from the electrical control alcove near the stage left entrance.

Elena turned. "What was that?"

"Stay here," Sophie said, but Elena was already moving toward the shadowy corridor behind the stage machinery.

She rounded the corner and stopped in horror.

Marcus Vance lay unconscious on the concrete floor, a deep gash bleeding against his temple. Standing over him, holding a heavy iron stage weight, was Julian Sterling’s personal assistant, a young, nervous stylist named Derek.

And behind Derek, standing inside the garment staging vault, was Julian himself.

He had bypassed the electronic security using an override key he hadn't surrendered. In his left hand, he held a heavy brass utility lighter. In his right, an open canister of industrial solvent.

The *Midnight Iris* hung on its central display pedestal just three feet away from him.

"Julian, stop!" Elena screamed, rushing forward.

Derek stepped in front of her, brandishing the iron weight, but Sophie charged from behind, slamming an aluminum steamer pole directly into Derek’s ribs with the fury of a college athlete. Derek collapsed with a yelp of pain, dropping the weight.

Julian didn't look at them. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, completely unhinged.

"If I am ruined, Cole House burns with me," Julian whispered, splashing the volatile solvent across the hem of the violet silk. The sharp, acrid stench of fuel instantly filled the enclosed space. "You think you can take my kingdom, Carter? You think you can walk out there and be crowned Margaret’s successor? I built this name! I gave them nine years of my blood!"

"You gave them stolen dreams!" Elena yelled, stepping into the vault, her eyes locked on the open flame of the lighter. "Julian, think about what you are doing. If you light that, the fire suppression system will flood the ballroom, people will be trampled, and you will spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security prison for attempted murder!"

"I'm already dead!" Julian screamed, his thumb flicking the wheel of the brass lighter. A bright yellow flame leaped into the air, dancing dangerously close to the solvent-soaked hem. "A designer without a name is a corpse in this town!"

"Julian, no!"

A sudden, deafening crash echoed through the vault as the reinforced steel emergency door was kicked off its hydraulic latch.

Lucas Cole burst through the doorway like a thunderbolt.

Without hesitating for a single heartbeat, Lucas lunged across the space, tackling Julian directly to the floor. The lighter flew from Julian's hand, spinning across the concrete, its flame catching a rag soaked in mineral spirits.

A line of fire flared upward toward the display rack.

"Elena, the fire blanket!" Lucas roared as he pinned the struggling Julian to the floor with an arm locked around his throat.

Elena grabbed the heavy wool fire blanket from the wall mount, threw herself over the burning rag, and smothered the flames with her bare hands, pressing the thick wool down until the heat scorched through her palms.

The fire sputtered and died.

Smoke curled toward the high ceiling, triggering the silent extraction fans, but the dress—the precious, irreplaceable violet dress—was untouched.

Police sirens were already wailing outside the loading dock as hotel security flooded the vault. Officers dragged Julian Sterling to his feet, twisting his arms behind his back in cold steel handcuffs.

Julian thrashed against the officers, his bespoke suit covered in dirt, his hair disheveled, his eyes fixed on Elena with burning hatred.

"You're nothing!" Julian spat, venom dripping from every syllable. "A nameless seamstress! You'll never be Margaret Cole!"

Lucas stepped up to Julian, his face dark with lethal contempt.

May you like

"She is not Margaret Cole," Lucas said, his voice cold enough to freeze water. "She is Elena Carter. And tomorrow, Julian, you will read her name from the cell you will occupy for the next fifteen years."
