Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Penthouse

By noon, the quiet world Elena had built to survive was entirely shattered.
Lucas had refused to let her return to her run-down apartment in Humboldt Park. Instead, he had dispatched his private security detail, headed by a taciturn former intelligence officer named Marcus Vance, to pick up Sophie from her nursing school dormitory and bring her directly to the Cole Tower.
When twenty-two-year-old Sophie burst through the penthouse double doors, she was clutching her backpack like a shield, her wide brown eyes darting between the marble columns, the panoramic view of the Chicago skyline, and her older sister.
"Elena!" Sophie cried, dropping her bag and throwing her arms around Elena’s neck. "What is happening? Two men in black suits pulled up outside my lecture hall! They said you were safe, but they wouldn't tell me why we couldn't go home!"
"I'm here, Soph. I'm okay," Elena whispered, burying her face in her sister’s hair, breathing in the familiar scent of cheap vanilla shampoo. "Nobody is hurt. I promise."
"Then why are you wearing a housekeeping uniform in a billionaire's living room?" Sophie pulled back, her sharp gaze instantly noticing the violet gown standing on the mannequin behind Elena. Sophie’s breath caught. She stepped toward it, her fingers hovering in the air. "Wait... this is the dress from Mom's old sketchbooks. The one with the clover knots."
From across the room, Lucas leaned against the mahogany bar, watching the two sisters with a mixture of solemnity and profound guilt.
"Your sister saved that dress last night," Lucas said, stepping forward.
Sophie turned to him, her youthful jaw setting into the fierce, protective defiance she had inherited from their mother. "And who are you?"
"Lucas Cole."
Sophie’s eyes narrowed instantly. "The man who owns the company that rejected Elena six years ago. The company that left my sister scrubbing hotel toilets while Julian Sterling bought villas in Tuscany with her work."
"Sophie, stop," Elena warned gently.
"No, Elena, I won't stop!" Sophie’s voice cracked with emotion. "You gave up everything! You gave up your degree, your dreams, your youth, just so I could go to school! And now he brings us here like we're charity cases?"
"You are not charity cases, Miss Carter," Lucas said, his voice quiet, devoid of the coldness he had shown Julian. "You are creditors. And Cole House owes your family an insurmountable debt."
He walked over to the drafting table and slid a heavy, leather-bound ledger across the surface.
"This is my mother’s personal journal," Lucas said, looking directly at Elena. "She kept it locked in her private safe. I only cracked the combination this morning after Julian left."
Elena walked over to the table, her heart pounding. She opened the cream-colored pages. The handwriting was elegant, slanted, but visibly deteriorating toward the final entries.
Elena read the passage Lucas pointed to:
>*May 14th.*
>*Julian brought me a revolutionary internal balance design today. He claimed it was his breakthrough after months of labor. But the soul of the drapery... it is too pure, too deeply rooted in the Midwest spirit to belong to a man who only cares for French champagne and status. I suspect he took it from the fellowship submissions. I searched the registrar, but the files have been purged. If I die before I find the girl whose hands birthed this vision, God forgive me for letting Cole House wear stolen feathers.*
Tears welled in Elena’s eyes and spilled over her lashes, splashing onto the leather cover. Margaret Cole had not been a thief. She had been an artist trapped by illness, surrounded by predators in her own empire.
"She knew," Elena whispered.
"She knew she was being deceived, but she didn't know your name," Lucas said softly, stepping closer to her. "Julian erased your digital records from the institute and from Cole House. But he couldn't erase your mother's knots. And he couldn't erase your talent."
Suddenly, Marcus Vance appeared in the doorway, his face grim.
"Mr. Cole," Marcus said quietly. "We have a problem."
Lucas turned. "What is it?"
Marcus held up an iPad. "Julian didn't go home. He went straight to the Chicago Tribune and fashion blog syndicates. He's claiming that you've suffered a nervous breakdown following the anniversary of your mother's death, that you've seized the company archives, and that you're being manipulated by an extortionist maid who planted counterfeit garments in the hotel."
Lucas’s jaw clenched. "Has it leaked to the press?"
"It's trending nationally," Marcus replied grimly. "The board of directors has called an emergency session for four o'clock today. If you cannot present conclusive legal proof of ownership for the archival collection, the board has the statutory authority to temporarily strip your voting power and reinstate Julian as interim CEO for tonight's Gala."
Elena felt the room spin. "Julian is going to win. He has the lawyers, he has the board, and I have nothing but a needle."
Lucas turned to Elena, his dark eyes burning with an intense, unwavering fire.
May you like
"You don't have nothing, Elena," Lucas said, reaching out and taking her trembling hands into his own. "You have the truth. And you have me. We are going to that board meeting. And then, we are taking the runway."
