Chapter 3 - The Freezing of the Network

The automated chime of Diego’s iPhone 15 Pro sounded through the silent conference room—a sharp, shrill triple-tone that shattered the remaining fragments of his composure.
Then his secondary business phone rang.
Then Camila’s private line chimed.
Diego scrambled forward, his fingers shaking so violently that he nearly dropped his phone onto the table. The screen was flooded with high-priority emergency push notifications from the NovaLink corporate dashboard:
ALERT: MENDOZA CLOUD HOSTING TERMINATED — REASON: SYSTEMIC DEFAULT.
ALERT: SILICON VALLEY CAPITAL REVOKES $20M BRIDGE FACILITY.
ALERT: NASDAQ REGISTRATION STATEMENT WITHDRAWN BY LEAD UNDERWRITER.
ALERT: CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER HAS RESIGNED EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.
"No... no, no, no!" Diego cried out, hammering his thumb against the screen, frantically trying to dial his lead software engineer in Austin. "Connect! Connect to the master terminal!"
The call connected to an automated recorded message:
“The corporate account associated with this line has been suspended by Mendoza Telecommunications for non-payment of infrastructural ground leases. Goodbye.”
Camila dropped her phone onto her lap, her designer facade completely crumbling as her face turned the shade of curdled milk. "Diego... what is happening? My father’s investment fund wired five million dollars into your IPO allocation this morning! The broker just texted me saying the stock symbol was removed from the exchange pre-market board!"
"Shut up, Camila!" Diego roared, spinning around to face Isabella, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and wild with feral panic.
He fell forward onto the mahogany table, his hands sliding across the polished wood, reaching toward the hem of her cream cardigan in a frantic, humiliating plea.
"Isabella! Bella, please!" Diego wept, tears of pure terror leaking from his eyes onto his bespoke collar. "Listen to me! I was under immense stress! The investment bankers... they forced me to create a ruthless public persona for the IPO roadshow! You know I love you! You know everything I built was for our future!"
Isabella looked down at the man who had spent twenty-four months degrading her meals, mocking her clothes, and parading his mistress in front of corporate boards.
Her eyes carried no anger. They held only the vast, unalterable finality of an ocean viewing a sinking pebble.
"You never loved anyone, Diego," Isabella said softly, each word falling like an iron deadbolt into place. "You loved the reflection of yourself in my father’s glass tower. And now the mirror is broken."
The heavy frosted-glass double doors of the conference suite slid open with a pneumatic hiss.
Stepping into the room were four armed private security operators wearing the dark charcoal tactical blazers and silver crests of Mendoza Sovereign Asset Protection, led by Commander Marcus Vance.
Behind them walked two uniformed detectives from the Miami Police Department’s Financial Crimes and Public Corruption Task Force.
"Mr. Mendoza," Commander Vance said, stepping forward and offering a crisp, respectful bow to Alejandro and Isabella. "The perimeter of the fifty-second floor is secure. All NovaLink executive devices and corporate server racks on the thirtieth floor have been physically impounded under judicial sequestration."
Alejandro nodded once.
"Escort Mr. Ramirez and Miss Sterling from my property," Alejandro commanded. "If they attempt to access the executive elevators or contact our terminal personnel, have them detained for criminal trespass."
"You can't throw me out!" Diego screamed, thrashing as two six-foot-four security operators caught him by his arms, lifting his frame out of the leather chair. "I am the CEO of NovaLink! My personal belongings are in the penthouse suite!"

"Your personal belongings were removed to the curb fifteen minutes ago, Mr. Ramirez," Detective Miller stated with freezing clinical detachment. "Pursuant to an emergency eviction writ issued by the Miami-Dade Chancery Court under Cause Number 26-CIV-9912. The penthouse on Brickell Key is titled under the Isabella Mendoza Living Trust."
As Diego and Camila were dragged down the hallway toward the service exit, their screams echoing off the soundproof glass walls, Isabella stepped to the panoramic window beside her father, looking out over the rain-swept harbor where her family’s maritime fleet glided peacefully through the gray mist.
