Chapter 7 - The Visitor in the Federal Ward

The subterranean detention ward of the Federal Detention Center in downtown Miami smelled of industrial floor wax, cold concrete, and bitter, rotting pride.
Diego Ramirez sat on the edge of a stainless-steel cot bolted to the wall of his solitary cell, wearing an oversized orange institutional jumpsuit.
His styled dark hair had been buzzed down to the scalp; his expensive manicured vanity had been completely stripped away, his hands and ankles secured with heavy steel transport chains.
The heavy steel slider door buzzed open with a loud hydraulic clank.
Isabella Mendoza walked into the cell.
She did not hurry. Her leather dress boots clicked rhythmically against the concrete with a slow, deliberate cadence. She wore an elegant camel-hair coat over her emerald dress, her posture commanding, sovereign, and entirely unbothered.
Diego flinched back against the concrete wall, his bloodshot eyes widening in a mixture of feral hatred and visceral terror.
"You came to gloat," Diego spat, his voice cracking into a dry, hoarse rasp.
"I came to look at you, Diego," Isabella said softly, stopping three paces from the cot. "I wanted to see what two years of stolen ambition looked like when the curtain was finally pulled back."
"You were always so self-righteous, Isabella!" Diego hissed, leaping to his feet, his transport chains rattling violently against the steel belt around his waist. "You played the humble housewife while sitting on an empire of billions! You set a trap for me! You wanted me to fail!"
"I gave you two years of an honest life, Diego," Isabella replied, her amber eyes locking onto his with freezing clarity. "I gave you a home. I gave you loyalty. I gave you the technology that made you famous. But you didn't want a home. You wanted an ornament you could control, and when you believed I had no power, you threw a credit card in my face and told me I was dull."
She reached into her coat pocket, pulling out a copy of the morning's unsealed federal grand jury indictment.
She dropped the heavy document onto the steel cot.
"Camila signed a full plea-allocution at sunrise, Diego," Isabella said. "She surrendered the encrypted routing tokens, the recorded phone calls where you planned to liquidate my family's server assets, and the wire transfers showing her father paid your personal credit card debts."
Diego’s breath hitched in his throat. He looked down at the forty-eight felony counts listed on the parchment, his hands shaking so violently that the paper fluttered against his knees.
"Camila... signed?" he whispered, his voice finally breaking into a pathetic, terrified whimper.
"Camila saved herself, Diego," Isabella answered quietly. "Just as you tried to save yourself at my dining table. The Sterling assets have been completely liquidated by the federal receivership, and your legal defense trust has a balance of zero."
Diego collapsed onto the cot, burying his face in his cuffed hands, weeping with the raw, ugly agony of a man who had realized that his vanity had left him completely alone in the dark.
"Isabella... please," he sobbed through his fingers. "I loved you... in my own way, I loved you... give me a second chance... tell your father to drop the racketeering counts..."
Isabella looked at the broken man on the cot.
The woman who had doubted her worth in the quiet townhouse in Coral Gables was gone forever, replaced by an unbroken sovereign who knew the exact value of her soul.
"You never loved anyone, Diego," Isabella whispered softly. "You only loved what you could steal. And now you can spend the rest of your life counting the days."
She turned her back on the broken executive.
May you like
"Guard," Isabella called out.
The heavy steel door slid open, and Isabella walked down the echoing corridor into the bright morning sunshine of Miami, leaving Diego Ramirez to weep in the concrete shadows where he would remain for thirty-two years.
