Chapter 10 - A New Empire

The arrests sent shockwaves through the Chicago underworld and corporate boardrooms alike. Marcus and Camille’s conspiracy collapsed under the weight of unassailable digital evidence, toxicological reports provided by Adeline’s hidden samples, and the confession of Dr. Vance, who turned state's evidence within forty-eight hours to avoid a maximum prison sentence. The Alfieri empire was purged of its internal rot, leaving Nico stronger, more vigilant, and completely untouchable.

A month later, the Cicero sun streamed brightly through the windows of a newly renovated apartment where Wes played happily with a pile of building blocks, his heart strong and healthy following a successful surgery.

Adeline stood on the balcony of the Alfieri estate overlooking the lake, the morning breeze carrying the fresh scent of water and pine. The front gates opened, and Nico’s car rolled up the drive. He didn't use a wheelchair anymore; he walked with the aid of a heavy carbon-fiber cane, his stride steady, determined, and entirely unbroken.

He stepped out onto the terrace and walked over to stand beside her, handing her a steaming cup of black coffee.

“How’s your brother doing?” Nico asked quietly, looking out over the water.

“He’s running around like he owns the place,” Adeline smiled, taking a sip of the coffee. “Thanks to you.”

May you like

“No,” Nico corrected gently, turning his dark, steady eyes toward her. “Thanks to the only person in this city who remembered I was human.”

Adeline looked back at him, the quiet tension of their early days entirely gone, replaced by an unbreakable bond forged in fire and truth. The empire was safe, the past was buried, and together, they were ready to write whatever came next.
