Chapter 9 - The Trap is Sprung

Three weeks after the engagement party, Marcus Alfieri and Camille Ashcroft walked into Nico’s private study carrying a thick leather binder containing the final corporate transfer documents. Camille wore a triumphant smile, while Marcus looked like a man about to carve up a holiday roast.

“It’s time to make things official, cousin,” Marcus said smoothly, dropping the binder onto Nico’s desk. “Given your medical condition, the board agrees it’s best to transition voting rights to Camille and myself until you're fully rehabilitated.”

Nico sat slumped in his wheelchair, staring blankly at the desk, his eyes heavy and unfocused—a masterclass in chemical mimicry. “If... if that’s what the board wants,” Nico muttered weakly, fumbling with a pen.

Camille beamed, leaning over to guide his hand toward the signature line. “You’re doing the right thing, Nico. Just sign here.”

Before the pen could touch the paper, the heavy study doors swung open with a loud bang.

Dr. Vance—the corrupt physical therapist—stepped inside alongside two federal agents and a representative from the state medical board, flanked by Adeline Marsh holding a sealed container of evidence.

“Don't sign that, Mr. Alfieri,” the lead federal agent announced, flashing a badge. “Marcus Alfieri, Camille Ashcroft, and Dr. Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy, corporate fraud, and the administration of controlled substances without patient consent.”

Camille’s face drained of all color, her jaw dropping as she spun around to face Nico.

Nico slowly sat straight up in his wheelchair, the glazed, drugged look instantly vanishing from his eyes, replaced by a cold, razor-sharp glare. He dropped the pen onto the desk and calmly crossed his arms.
