Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Gala

The Winter Solstice Gala was held in the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, an event where the predatory elite of Manhattan gathered under crystal chandeliers to drink champagne and carve up the city’s economic future.
Claire stepped out of Adrian’s armored Maybach feeling entirely out of her depth.
She wore a sapphire-blue silk gown that Walter had personally ordered from a private Fifth Avenue atelier that afternoon. The dress fell in graceful, liquid folds to the floor, framing her collarbones and accentuating the slender curve of her waist. Her chestnut hair was pinned up in an elegant, loose chignon, revealing the delicate line of her neck.
Adrian stepped out behind her, looking immaculate in a tailored midnight-black tuxedo that concealed the bandages on his shoulder. When he offered her his arm, the photographers along the velvet rope erupted into a frenzy of flashing lights.
*“Mr. Vale! Who is your companion?”*
*“Is this the new Sterling merger announcement?”*
*“Adrian, look this way!”*
Adrian ignored the cameras, his focus entirely on Claire. “Keep your chin up,” he murmured close to her ear, his breath tickling her skin. “You belong here more than any of these wolves.”
Inside the ballroom, the atmosphere was thick with live orchestral music, expensive cigars, and venomous whispers.
Across the room, Marcus Vance—a silver-haired titan with the cold, calculating eyes of a shark—stood with Julian Vale and Victoria Sterling. When Victoria caught sight of Claire on Adrian’s arm, her champagne glass trembled in her grip, spilling onto her designer gown.
“What is she doing here?” Victoria hissed, her voice cutting through the hum of conversation. “Adrian brought that scullery girl to the Solstice Gala?”
Julian frowned, his eyes narrowing. “Adrian’s playing a dangerous game. But don't worry. The trap is already set.”
Walter Vale entered the ballroom a few paces behind them, accompanied by two high-ranking state senators. The old man was dressed in a vintage three-piece bespoke tuxedo, carrying himself with an aristocratic dignity that rendered every socialite in the room speechless. The rumors that Walter Vale had lost his mind were shattered in an instant.
Claire stayed by Walter’s side for the first hour, ensuring he had sparkling water and guiding him away from overly aggressive corporate suitors. But as the evening progressed, Walter was pulled into a private alcove by the governor for a discussion on port regulations.
“I’ll be fine for twenty minutes, child,” Walter assured her with a warm wink. “Go fetch some of those tiny crab cakes you were eyeing. Adrian is watching you from the bar anyway; he hasn't looked away for an hour.”
Claire blushed and stepped toward the buffet. But before she could reach it, Victoria Sterling intercepted her, flanked by two sneering society matrons.
“Enjoying your fairy tale, Cinderella?” Victoria sneered, her voice dripping with malice. “Wearing a borrowed dress, pretending you’re a lady. Did you really think sleeping your way into the Vale estate would earn you a seat at our table?”
Claire didn't flinch. She set her glass down on a passing waiter’s tray and faced Victoria head-on. “I haven't slept with anyone, Miss Sterling. But even if I had, it would still make me more respectable than a woman who measures her worth by a man who clearly wants nothing to do with her.”
Victoria’s face contorted with rage. “You insolent little—”
Suddenly, a loud shriek echoed from the adjoining corridor leading to the private VIP suites.
Marjorie Keene—dressed in the black uniform of the Plaza’s banquet staff—stumbled out into the ballroom, pointing an accusatory finger directly at Claire.
“Security! Stop her!” Marjorie screamed, her voice cutting through the orchestra. “She stole it! The Sterling Diamond!”
The ballroom descended into an absolute hush.
Julian stepped forward, looking suitably shocked. “What did you say, Marjorie?”
“I saw her!” Marjorie wailed, playing her role with theatrical perfection. “I work catering here now. I was cleaning the VIP lounge when I saw this girl—Claire Bennett—slip Miss Sterling’s family heirloom necklace into her evening clutch! Miss Sterling left it on the dressing table while fixing her makeup!”
Victoria gasped, reaching instinctively for her bare throat. “My grandmother’s sapphire necklace! It’s worth two million dollars!”
Within seconds, four Plaza hotel security guards surrounded Claire.
“Miss, please step aside and hand over your clutch,” the head of security commanded.
Claire felt the blood drain from her face. She looked down at the small satin purse in her hand. “I didn't take anything. I haven't even been to the VIP suites tonight!”
“Search her!” Julian demanded, his voice carrying across the entire ballroom. “My cousin might be blinded by her pretty face, but a thief is a thief! Check the bag!”
The guard reached out and snatched the clutch from Claire’s hands. He popped the gold clasp and dumped the contents onto a silver platter.
Along with Claire’s lipstick and phone, a massive, tear-shaped sapphire pendant encrusted with platinum diamonds tumbled onto the silver with a sickening clatter.
Gasps of horror rippled through the elite crowd.
“I told you!” Victoria cried, pointing dramatically. “She’s a criminal! Arrest her immediately!”
Claire stood frozen, her heart slamming against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked across the sea of judgmental faces, feeling the walls closing in.
Then, the heavy doors of the ballroom didn't open—they slammed shut as Adrian’s private security detail took command of every exit.
