Chapter 6 - A Whispered Confession

The penthouse sat fifty-four stories above the glittering grid of Manhattan, a glass sanctuary high above the noise, the greed, and the violence of the streets below.

After the gala had dissolved into endless waves of congratulations and press inquiries, Adrian had whisked Claire away from the Plaza in a private helicopter, leaving Walter to hold court with the board members.

Claire stood on the wrap-around terrace, the cool night wind lifting the hem of her sapphire dress. She leaned against the glass railing, watching the yellow cabs crawl like tiny fireflies down Fifth Avenue.

The heavy glass sliding door opened, and Adrian stepped out, holding two crystal tumblers of amber bourbon. He had discarded his tuxedo jacket and bow tie, the top two buttons of his dress shirt undone, revealing the edge of the sterile bandage Claire had stitched the night before.

“You’re quiet,” Adrian said, handing her a glass.

Claire took it, the crystal cold against her fingertips. “I think I’m waiting to wake up in my apartment in Yonkers, with my landlord banging on the radiator and my alarm buzzing for the 5:00 AM shift.”

Adrian leaned his forearms against the railing beside her, staring out over the city. “If this is a dream, Miss Bennett, I have no intention of letting you wake up.”

Claire looked up at him through her lashes. The harsh lines of his face were softened by the amber terrace lighting. He looked younger here, away from the guards and the corporate vultures.

“Why didn't you doubt me tonight, Adrian?” she asked, the question that had been burning in her chest finally breaking free. “The necklace was in my bag. Even the hotel security was convinced. A man in your position... you survive by being suspicious of everyone.”

Adrian turned his head to meet her gaze. The intensity in his gray eyes was breathtaking.

“I’ve spent fifteen years surrounded by people who smile at me while holding knives behind their backs,” Adrian said softly. “Julian, Victoria, Marcus Vance... they all wanted a piece of the Vale empire. They measured every word, every hug, every kiss against the stock market ticker. But you?”

He set his glass down on the stone ledge and took a step closer, eliminating the space between them.

“You knelt in spilled soup to protect an old man you thought had nothing to give you,” Adrian continued, his voice dropping into a husky, intimate whisper. “You stitched my flesh without asking what I did to deserve the wound. You looked at the most feared man in New York and told him to stop making monsters.”

Claire’s heart hammered against her ribs. “Adrian...”

“I didn't doubt you tonight, Claire, because you are the only honest thing that has walked into my life in twenty years.”

He reached out, his broad hand cupping the side of her face. His thumb brushed over her cheekbone, tender and reverent, contrasting sharply with the lethal power he wielded in the world below.

Claire leaned into his touch, her eyes fluttering shut for a brief second before she looked back up at him. “I was terrified today. Not of being poor—I know how to be poor. I was terrified that you would look at me the way they did. Like I was dirt.”

“Never,” Adrian swore, his voice fierce with conviction. “Never while I draw breath.”

He tilted her chin upward. For a suspended, breathless second, neither of them moved.

Then, Adrian lowered his mouth to hers.

The kiss began slow, tentative, as if he were afraid his harsh world would shatter her. But as Claire parted her lips with a quiet sigh, wrapping her arms around his neck, the kiss deepened into something consuming, fiery, and desperate. Adrian pulled her flush against his chest, his uninjured arm wrapping around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet.

The wind howled around the glass tower, but inside Adrian’s embrace, Claire felt an overwhelming, unshakable safety.

When they finally broke apart, both breathless, Adrian rested his forehead against hers.

“Stay with me, Claire,” he whispered into the dark. “Not as an employee. Not as an aide. Stay with me.”

Claire smiled, her fingers tracing the strong line of his jaw. “I’m not going anywhere, Adrian Vale.”
