Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

Happiness, Claire quickly realized, was a dangerous commodity in Adrian Vale’s world. It acted like a beacon, drawing out every creature lurking in the dark.
Three weeks had passed since the night of the gala. Julian and Victoria were out on substantial bail, their bank accounts frozen while federal prosecutors built their fraud cases. Walter had officially signed the papers establishing the Bennett Foundation, and Claire had spent her days working out of a renovated office in Midtown, organizing health clinics for retired union workers.
She felt fulfilled. She felt alive. And every evening, Adrian would arrive at her office—often dismissing his armed security detail just to walk two blocks down the avenue with her, hand in hand, eating roasted chestnuts like ordinary lovers.
It was too perfect.
On a gray Thursday afternoon, Claire received a panicked phone call from her younger sister, Jenny.
“Claire! Claire, please help!” Jenny’s voice was hysterical, drowned out by the screech of tires and broken glass.
Claire jumped up from her desk, knocking a stack of foundation blueprints to the floor. “Jenny? What’s wrong? Where are you?”
“Two men... they forced their way into the nursing school dorms!” Jenny sobbed. “They said Julian Vale sent them! They’re looking for you, Claire! They said if you don't bring the foundation ledger and the port security codes to the Yonkers rail yard by five o'clock, they’re going to—”
The line went dead with the sharp crack of a gunshot.
“Jenny!” Claire screamed into the phone. “Jenny!”
Panic seized Claire’s chest like a vise. She dialed Adrian’s private cell.
*“The subscriber you are trying to reach is currently unavailable...”*
She called Briggs. Busy signal.
Claire checked the time: 4:15 PM. Yonkers was forty-five minutes away in heavy traffic.
She didn't know that Julian’s legal team had orchestrated a coordinated cyber-attack on the Vale communications network twenty minutes earlier, jamming Adrian’s satellite relays across the city while Marcus Vance launched a desperate, scorched-earth bid to reclaim the Brooklyn shipping terminals.
Claire didn't know that Jenny was already safe—that Walter’s private security had intercepted the kidnappers outside the nursing dorms ten minutes prior, but the signal jammer had prevented the confirmation call from reaching Claire.
All Claire knew was that her little sister was in danger because of her.
Without waiting, Claire grabbed her coat, rushed down the private elevator to the underground parking garage, and jumped into the modest sedan Adrian had purchased for her commute.

She sped out of the garage into the freezing Manhattan sleet, her hands white on the steering wheel, racing directly into the mouth of the trap.
