Chapter 4 - The Interrogation in the Library

The library on the first floor smelled of old leather, woodsmoke, and rain.
Dr. Calvin Sterling sat strapped to a heavy oak chair in the center of the room, his expensive wool overcoat soaked with rain, his hands shaking so violently that the ice water in the glass Giovanni had placed before him was splashing over the rim.
When Rocco stepped into the room, flanked by Thomas Russo and two armed tactical operatives, the physician nearly threw himself out of the chair.
"Rocco! Please! I was coerced!" Sterling cried out, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. "Marcus told me that if I didn't certify the stillbirth, his associates in Boston would call in the four-million-dollar construction loan on my surgical center!"
Rocco pulled up a high-backed leather chair, sitting down directly across from the doctor, resting his elbows on his knees.
"Explain the surrogate, Calvin," Rocco said, his tone conversational and deadly. "Where is Maria?"
Sterling swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing. "She’s alive! I swear to God she’s alive! We moved her to a private recovery clinic in Greenwich under an assumed name forty-eight hours ago. Valentina paid her three hundred thousand dollars to sign a non-disclosure agreement and told her the child had been transferred to a private neonatal ICU in Manhattan."
"And the black van?"
"Marcus's private courier," Sterling wept, tears streaming down his face. "He was instructed to pick up the crate from the estate service entrance and take it to the industrial waste incinerator at the Brooklyn naval yards. The courier didn't know what was inside the box! He thought it was contaminated medical waste from the estate's private clinic!"
Thomas Russo placed a red leather folio onto the table between them.
"We intercepted the courier at the Verrazzano Bridge ten minutes ago, Boss," Thomas reported. "He confirmed the drop coordinates. Marcus Sterling is currently waiting at the Apex Logistics terminal in Boston, expecting the confirmation wire from Valentina’s account."
Rocco stood up, looking down at the weeping physician with the cold, immovable judgment of an ancient sovereign.
"You traded the life of an infant for a commercial building loan, Calvin," Rocco whispered softly. "You violated the sacred oath of your profession, and you brought treason into my house."
"Rocco, please... I have children..."
"Your children will be provided for," Rocco said. "Because my men are taking your private clinic, your assets, and your medical licenses. You will sign a full, sworn judicial confession detailing every wire transfer, every forged death certificate, and every conversation with Marcus Sterling."
Rocco turned to Giovanni.
"Escort Dr. Sterling to the Federal Prosecutor’s office in Brooklyn at dawn. Hand him directly to Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Reed."

As Giovanni unstrapped the weeping physician and dragged him from the library, Rocco turned to his consigliere.
"Thomas," Rocco commanded. "Assemble the captains of the five boroughs. Fuel the private jet at JFK. At dawn, we take the war to Boston."
