Chapter 2 - The Sunset Call

While Ethan was pedaling his rusted ten-speed bicycle through the chilly New Jersey sleet toward his mother’s apartment, the ragged biker was sitting alone in the darkened corner booth of The Rusty Anchor.

The diner had emptied out entirely. Arthur Higgins was furiously scrubbing the flat-top grill, venting his lingering rage by slamming spatula blades against the metal.

The biker pulled a sleek, unbranded satellite phone from his shredded jacket—a device completely devoid of consumer carrier logos, glowing with an encrypted emerald diode. He tapped a single speed-dial icon and brought the phone to his ear.

"Sterling," a crisp, anxious voice answered on the very first ring—not Arthur the diner owner, but Arthur Sterling, Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Global Media & Broadcasting, a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate controlling television networks, publishing houses, and digital news empires worldwide.

"Arthur," the weathered biker spoke into the receiver, his voice dropping into the crisp, commanding baritone of a man who owned the world. "Did you locate the primary legal folio from the New Jersey franchise audits?"

The CEO on the other end gasped, his voice instantly shifting into absolute, reverent submission. "Mr. Sterling! Thank God you're safe! The security detail lost your transponder signal near the state line four hours ago! We've been in full crisis mobilization—"

"Save the dramatics, Arthur," the billionaire interrupted smoothly. "I spent the evening evaluating our retail franchise portfolio under cover. Specifically, The Rusty Anchor on Route 4."

A breathless pause hung on the line. "Sir... that franchise is owned and operated by our regional commercial real estate subsidiary. Is there a compliance issue?"

"There is a severe moral and operational rot, Arthur," the billionaire replied, his ice-blue eyes reflecting the neon beer signs outside the window. "The franchise manager, a man named Arthur Higgins, routinely humiliates patrons, violates labor standards, and abuses his underage staff. But tonight, he met a seventeen-year-old busboy named Ethan Carter."

The billionaire recounted the events of the evening with clinical precision: the dropped silver signet ring, the public mockery from the truck drivers, Higgins's casual cruelty, and Ethan sacrificing his own bus fare to preserve a stranger's dignity.

When he finished, the line remained silent for several seconds.

"What are your instructions, sir?" the CEO asked quietly.

"Execute Section 9 of the corporate charter," the media titan commanded, every single syllable landing like an iron hammer. "Terminate Arthur Higgins's franchise lease effective immediately. Seize the property, initiate a complete forensic audit of his financial records for wage theft and tax evasion, and have my personal legal counsel draw up an immediate, unconditioned educational endowment and executive mentorship portfolio for Ethan Carter."

"Consider it done, Mr. Sterling," the CEO replied. "When would you like us to implement the transition?"

"At sunrise," the billionaire said, tapping the phone to end the call. "I want the sign changed before the morning coffee brews."
