Chapter 3 - The Sunrise Eviction

The morning sun broke over Route 4 in brilliant ribbons of gold and amber, burning off the overnight sleet and washing the parking lot of The Rusty Anchor in a crisp, clean light.
At 6:30 AM, Arthur Higgins pulled up to the diner in his rusted Ford pickup truck, whistling a cheerful tune as he held a cardboard box of fresh powdered donuts. He was eager to open the diner, harass the morning shift, and gloat to Ethan about staying late.
He slammed his truck door shut, walked up to the front entrance, and reached into his pocket for his brass keys.
He stopped dead in his tracks.
The heavy glass front doors were locked, but across the glass was a massive, gold-embossed legal notice stamped with the official corporate seal of Sterling Global Media & Broadcasting.
NOTICE OF IMMEDIATE LEASE REVOCATION AND ASSET SEIZURE. Pursuant to Master Franchise Agreement Article XII: Gross Operational Misconduct, Labor Violations, and Severe Moral Turpitude.
Arthur blinked, rubbing his eyes as if he were dreaming. "What the hell is this?" he muttered, rattling the door handle. "This is a joke! Some punk kid's idea of a prank!"
Before Arthur could pull out his phone to call the police, two sleek, black Cadillac Escalades pulled off the highway and parked directly behind his truck, blocking him in.
Four men in immaculate charcoal business suits stepped out of the vehicles, led by a sharp-eyed corporate attorney named Katherine Vance.
"Mr. Higgins?" Katherine asked, her voice crisp and devoid of emotion.
"Who are you?! What is the meaning of this?!" Arthur shrieked, waving the gold-embossed notice in the air. "I have a five-year franchise operating agreement! You can't just lock my doors over a piece of paper!"
"Mr. Higgins, you no longer have a franchise, an operating agreement, or a business," Katherine replied coldly, sliding a thick stack of forensic audit logs into his chest. "Our financial investigators have been reviewing your books for the past twelve hours. You are currently facing federal charges for wage theft, tax evasion, and fraudulent health code compliance."
"Wage theft?! Tax evasion?! Are you insane?!" Arthur bellowed, his face turning the color of a ripe plum. "I run a legitimate diner! Who authorized this?! What corporate board is behind this insanity?!"
"The sole owner and chairman of Sterling Global," Katherine stated calmly, stepping past him toward the front door with a master key. "Mr. Arthur Sterling himself."
Arthur froze. The name hung in the morning air like a lightning bolt. Arthur Sterling? The reclusive media mogul who owned television networks, publishing houses, and half the commercial real estate in the Northeast?!
"Arthur Sterling... owns the diner?" Arthur whispered, the color draining completely from his face. "That's impossible... he hasn't set foot in a public restaurant in twenty years!"

"He set foot in yours last night," Katherine replied smoothly, twisting the key in the lock and pushing open the front doors. "And your mistreatment of a customer—and your blatant cruelty toward an exemplary employee named Ethan Carter—just cost you everything you've ever built."
As two local police officers arrived in a patrol car to serve Arthur with formal eviction and asset-freezing paperwork, Arthur sank down onto the concrete curb, burying his face in his hands as his miserable career vanished into thin air.
