Chapter 4 - The Knock on the Door

While Arthur Higgins was learning the devastating cost of cruelty on the sidewalk outside, seventeen-year-old Ethan Carter was sitting at the wobbly kitchen table in his family’s cramped apartment, staring down at a cold bowl of oatmeal.

The apartment was quiet. His mother, Sarah, was still asleep in the back bedroom, her breathing shallow as she rested her hands, swollen from arthritis, on the blanket.

Ethan was running the numbers in his head. Without his bus fare money from the previous night, he would have to walk the four miles to his high school in the freezing wind. He had no idea how he was going to buy his biology textbook next week, let alone help with the mounting electricity bill.

A sharp, authoritative knock rapped against the front apartment door.

Ethan frowned, glancing at the kitchen clock. It was barely 7:15 AM. Landlords didn't knock this early unless they were serving another past-due notice.

He walked down the narrow hallway, unlocked the deadbolt, and pulled the door open.

Standing on the welcome mat was not a landlord. It was a tall, elegant woman in a tailored charcoal suit—Katherine Vance—flanked by two men in dark overcoats.

"Ethan Carter?" Katherine asked, offering a polite, professional smile.

Ethan swallowed hard, his defensive instincts flaring. "Yes? Can I help you?"

"My name is Katherine Vance, senior legal counsel for Sterling Global," she said, holding out a heavy, cream-colored leather portfolio embossed with gold leaf. "May we come in for a moment? We need to discuss your employment status at The Rusty Anchor."

Ethan stepped back, a cold knot forming in his stomach. Fired twice in twelve hours, he thought bitterly. They tracked me down even at home just to make sure I'm blacklisted from sweeping floors.

"Look, if this is about last night," Ethan said defensively, standing his ground in the doorway. "I paid for that man's breakfast out of my own pocket. I didn't steal anything from the register. If Mr. Higgins sent you here to threaten me—"

"Mr. Higgins is currently sitting on the curb outside his former diner answering questions from local federal prosecutors," Katherine interrupted smoothly, a faint, amused smile touching her lips. "He won't be threatening anyone ever again."

Ethan blinked, completely stunned. "What? What do you mean?"

"May we come in, Ethan?" Katherine repeated gently. "I promise you, nothing in this portfolio is a threat."

Ethan hesitantly stepped aside, allowing the corporate lawyers into the cramped living room. He pulled out two kitchen chairs, and Katherine sat down across from him, placing the heavy leather portfolio on the laminate table.

She opened the clasp, revealing three distinct documents: a certified bank cashier's check made out to Ethan in the amount of fifty thousand dollars; a full four-year educational scholarship to any Ivy League or state university of his choice; and an executive appointment letter naming him Youth Operations Consultant for the Sterling Global Community Foundation.

Ethan stared at the papers, his jaw dropping so low it nearly hit the table. He rubbed his eyes, thinking he was still half-asleep and dreaming in his bed.

"Fifty thousand... dollars?" Ethan stammered, his voice cracking. "Scholarship? What is this? I don't understand."

"This is the opening chapter of your new life, Ethan," Katherine said softly, sliding the documents toward him. "Sent to you with the personal compliments and profound gratitude of Mr. Arthur Sterling."

Ethan’s heart gave a violent, disbelieving thud. Arthur Sterling? The biker from last night?!
