Chapter 6 - The Cleansing of the Past

Over the next three weeks, the toxic legacy of the Ashford family was systematically erased from Chicago.
Judge Richard Ashford was formally stripped of his judicial robes by unanimous vote of the State Supreme Court, his pension seized, and his multi-million-dollar real estate holdings liquidated under federal civil asset forfeiture statutes.
The Cook County Court issued a comprehensive, irrevocable decree: my legal name was restored to Camille Bennett, the fraudulent marriage was declared null and void ab initio, and full, unassailable legal and physical custody of Josephine and Willa was vested exclusively in Julian Vance and me.
The tiny, cramped one-bedroom apartment in Humboldt Park where the girls and I had spent six months hiding in fear was cleared by our moving team.
I stood in the center of the empty living room on a warm Friday afternoon, looking at the deadbolt locks on the front door and the wooden dowels I had jammed into the window frames every single night to prevent intrusion.
Footsteps sounded softly on the threshold.
Julian walked in, wearing an open-collared white linen shirt and dark trousers. He stopped beside me, looking around the small, bare room.
"It was a fortress, Julian," I whispered, a faint smile touching my lips through lingering memories. "It wasn't pretty, but it kept my babies safe."
Julian wrapped his strong arm around my shoulders, pulling me into his side, kissing the crown of my head with infinite tenderness.
"You built a sanctuary out of nothing, Camille," Julian murmured softly. "You protected our daughters with your own blood. But you don't have to stand guard at the door anymore. That’s my job for the rest of our lives."

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a set of brass keys attached to a silver keychain engraved with the address of the Lake Shore estate.
"Let’s go home, Camille," Julian smiled. "The girls are waiting for their ice cream."
