Chapter 9 - The Vows on Lake Michigan

That summer, on a warm, sun-drenched Saturday afternoon in July, the private gardens of the Lake Shore estate were decorated with thousands of white hydrangeas and wild jasmine.
It was our wedding day.
There were no high-society contracts, no forced alliances, and no fear.
There were only sixty of our closest friends, our loyal staff, Mrs. Gable, Dr. Sarah Lin, Detective Callahan, and the people who had stood beside us through the storm.
A cedar arbor adorned with cascading white roses stood at the edge of the limestone terrace overlooking the crystal-blue expanse of Lake Michigan.
I walked down the petal-strewn aisle in an exquisite gown of ivory French lace, my dark hair styled in soft waves adorned with small pearl pins.
Walking before me, looking radiant, healthy, and full of unshadowed childhood joy, were our five-year-old twin daughters, Josie and Willa, acting as our flower girls, tossing rose petals from silver baskets and giggling in the warm breeze.
Julian stood at the altar in a bespoke black tuxedo, his slate-gray eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that silenced the world.
When I reached his side, he took both of my hands into his, his fingers strong, warm, and steady.
Pastor Thomas, a kind, retired naval chaplain, smiled warmly as he looked between Julian and me.
Julian took a slow breath, his voice steady, rich, and vibrating with absolute, eternal devotion.
"Camille," Julian said, his eyes shining with profound love. "Six years ago, I promised you a future, and then the world tore us apart. You fought through the fire, you protected our daughters with your own life, and you never lost the purity of your beautiful heart. Today, before God and our children, I give you my life, my name, and my soul. I promise to stand between you and every storm, to cherish your brilliant courage, and to spend every breath I have loving you, Josie, and Willa with an unbroken, sovereign truth."
Tears of pure, radiant joy spilled down my cheeks as I slipped the heavy platinum band onto his finger.
"Julian," I smiled through my tears, my voice full of boundless peace. "You tore down the walls of our prison to bring us home. You showed our daughters what a real father looks like. I choose you today, tomorrow, and for all the days of our lives."
Pastor Thomas raised his hands in a quiet blessing. "By the power of love, truth, and restored honor, I pronounce you husband and wife."

Julian pulled me into his arms, lifting me slightly off the stone terrace, and kissed me—a deep, sacred promise of an unbroken future built on truth, courage, and unconditional love.
Josie and Willa let out a joyful cheer, running forward to wrap their small arms around our legs, giggling as Julian scooped both of them up into our embrace, holding all four of us against his heart as the sun turned the lake to molten gold.
