Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Tyrants

Six months later, the Dirksen Federal Courthouse opened the formal criminal trial of The United States versus Richard Ashford and Travis Ashford.
The trial lasted twelve days, drawing national media coverage and exposing the terrifying corruption of municipal judicial dynasties that preyed upon vulnerable women and children.
Julian and I sat in the front row of the prosecution gallery.
Josie and Willa remained at home on the estate, happily engaged in their morning kindergarten lessons with their private tutors and Dr. Sarah Lin.
Travis and Richard Ashford sat at the defense table in matching orange jumpsuits.
Without his father's judicial influence, his expensive legal team, and his arrogance, Travis looked like a hollow, bitter phantom, his head bowed, unable to meet the eyes of the twelve jurors.
When I took the witness stand on the fifth day, my testimony lasted three hours.
I spoke not with hatred, but with the clear, steady, and unshakeable dignity of a mother who had walked through the fire to save her children. I recounted the four years of captivity in Barrington, the forged birth records, the stalking in the city, and the hands that had closed around my throat in the grocery store.
The jury deliberated for exactly thirty-eight minutes.
The foreperson stood in a packed, silent courtroom and delivered the verdict across all forty-eight felony counts:
"On the count of First-Degree Attempted Aggravated Kidnapping—Guilty. On the count of Felony Domestic Battery with Strangulation—Guilty. On all counts of Judicial Extortion, Bribery, and Civil Rights Violations—Guilty on all counts."
United States District Judge Evelyn Montgomery delivered the sentences from the bench with solemn, unyielding severity:
"Travis Ashford, you demonstrated a calculated, predatory cruelty, weaponizing physical violence against an innocent woman and terrorizing two defenseless children," Judge Montgomery declared, her voice ringing through the silent hall. "You are hereby sentenced to Thirty-Five Years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Terre Haute without the possibility of early parole."
The judge struck her wooden gavel down with concussive finality.
"Richard Ashford is sentenced to Forty-Two Years at ADX Florence."

Travis collapsed onto the defense table, weeping in bitter, total ruin as the armed federal marshals moved in to drag the disgraced predators down the subterranean holding corridor forever.
Julian and I stood up, walked down the center aisle of the courtroom hand-in-hand with Marcus Reed and Detective Callahan, and stepped through the double mahogany doors into the bright autumn sunlight, leaving the darkness behind us in the marble halls forever.
