Chapter 4 - The Midnight Extraction

By 9:00 p.m., the executive war room on the forty-ninth floor had been converted into an active forensic command center.

Sixteen digital investigators from the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division, accompanied by four private forensic auditors from Deloitte, sat around the secondary glass tables, analyzing decrypted files extracted from Harold Sterling’s private office safe.

Graham sat across from me in the private library lounge, wearing a dark cashmere sweater with the sleeves pushed up, holding two crystal glasses of sparkling water. A plate of warm artisan sandwiches sat untouched on the low table between us.

"You handled the boardroom like you were born to sit in that chair, Avery," Graham said softly, handing me a glass, his slate-gray eyes warm with deep, unreserved respect.

I took the glass, feeling the cool condensation against my skin, looking out through the glass at the glittering lights of Chicago.

"My father taught me how to read shipping manifests and corporate balance sheets when I was twelve years old, Graham," I replied softly. "He told me that power in business isn't about shouting or waving contracts; it's about knowing where the foundation stones are buried."

The heavy oak door of the lounge clicked open.

Arthur Ross walked into the room, accompanied by Special Agent Sarah Lin of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"The forensic extraction from Harold Sterling’s encrypted drives is complete, Graham, Avery," Agent Lin reported, placing an unsealed, red-tabbed federal dossier on the coffee table. "The conspiracy runs far deeper than a boardroom coup."

Graham leaned forward, his jaw hardening into stone. "Show us the records, Agent Lin."

Agent Lin opened the dossier, illuminating the digital routing nodes.

"Point one," Lin explained. "Over the past eighteen months, Julian Reed and Harold Sterling systematically embezzled forty-two million dollars from the Southwest transit infrastructure bond reserves, funneling the capital through three shell entities in Grand Cayman: Apex Logistics Holdings, Meridian Rail Partners, and Sterling Capital International."

"And the break-in at my hotel suite in Las Vegas?" I asked.

"Julian hired a former corporate intelligence operative named Victor Vance to steal your family's trust documents," Agent Lin revealed. "They realized that if you and Graham discovered the forty-two-million-dollar deficit during the Southwest closing audit, their entire syndicate would face immediate federal indictment. They planned to execute the forged equity transfer, force Graham out of the CEO chair, and liquidate the company's deepwater rail terminals to cover their offshore margin calls."

Graham stood up, walking to the panoramic windows overlooking Wacker Drive, his hands clenching into fists at his sides.

"Julian tried to destroy my family’s name, steal your father’s life work, and leave four thousand rail workers without pensions," Graham said, his voice dropping into an octave of lethal, subterranean iron.

He turned back to the table, looking at Agent Lin and Arthur Ross.

"Unseal the grand jury warrants at dawn," Graham commanded. "We are rolling on Julian Reed's private estate in Lake Forest before the sun rises."
