Chapter 5 - The Raid in Lake Forest

At 6:15 a.m. on Friday, a dense autumn fog rolled off Lake Michigan, blanketing the manicured ten-acre grounds of the Julian Reed ancestral estate in Lake Forest.
Inside the grand morning room on the second floor, Julian Reed sat at a polished walnut table wearing an expensive silk dressing gown, sipping black espresso while frantically reviewing digital stock tickers on three separate monitors.
Opposite him sat his defense litigator, Arthur Davies, who was packing stacks of passports and offshore banking tokens into a leather briefcase.
"The pre-market trading is disastrous, Julian," Davies said, his hands shaking with nervous sweat. "The New York exchange accepted Avery Vance-Reed’s signature on the sovereign trust filing. The stock is up twenty-two percent, and the institutional lenders have frozen all five of our offshore credit lines."
"We still have the physical bearer bonds in the Geneva vault!" Julian snarled, slamming his coffee cup onto the saucer. "Get the private helicopter on the south lawn! We leave for Montreal in twenty minutes!"
The heavy mahogany double front doors of the estate were suddenly blown off their hinges with a concussive, hydraulic roar.
BANG.
The clatter of heavy tactical combat boots against the marble entrance foyer echoed up the grand curving staircase, accompanied by the authoritative commands of federal law enforcement.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Search warrant! Nobody move!"
Julian sprang from his chair, spilling his coffee across the white linen tablecloth. "Davies! Get the safe locked! Who authorized this breach?"
Julian didn't have to wait for an answer.
The double doors of the morning room swung wide open with a sharp, echoing crash.
Stepping through the threshold was Graham Reed and Avery Vance-Reed.
Graham wore an immaculate bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, his posture upright, commanding, and absolute. Beside him, I wore a tailored dark navy wool coat and high heels, my left hand resting proudly over Graham’s arm, the platinum wedding band gleaming under the chandelier lights.
Flanking us were eight armed FBI tactical operators in dark windbreakers, led by Special Agent Sarah Lin and Detective Marcus Thorne.
Julian staggered backward against the window, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and wild with feral, cornered panic.
"Graham! Avery!" Julian stammered, his hands coming up in a trembling, defensive gesture. "This is an unconstitutional invasion of a private residence! You have no legal jurisdiction to bring armed federal agents into my home!"
Special Agent Sarah Lin stepped forward, unrolling an unsealed federal arrest warrant stamped with the gold seal of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
"Julian Reed," Agent Lin announced with freezing clinical detachment. "Pursuant to Cause Number 26-CR-9941, you are under arrest for forty-eight counts of federal enterprise racketeering under the RICO Act, grand corporate embezzlement, interstate wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit corporate burglary."
Two tactical agents moved forward, ratcheting heavy stainless-steel handcuffs around Julian’s wrists over his silk gown.
Julian thrashed against the restraints, glaring at me with pure, unadulterated venom. "You think you’ve won, you little clerk? You think wearing a ring makes you a Reed? My father built this company! You and your dead father are nothing but parasites who stole my family's empire!"
May you like
I stepped forward, stopping two feet from where the disgraced patriarch stood pinned against the wall.
"My father didn't steal anything, Julian," I said, each word falling like an iron deadbolt into place. "He built the tracks you walked on. And now you can spend the rest of your life counting the ties from behind a prison gate."
