Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the Foyer

The footsteps stopped abruptly at the threshold of the formal parlor.

Marcus Vance—Arthur’s longtime friend, real estate partner, and the man who had sold him the Elm Street property six months ago—stood in the doorway. He was wearing an expensive gray tweed jacket, holding a leather briefcase in one hand and a set of car keys in the other. He had let himself in through the unlocked front door, expecting a casual afternoon check-in on the renovation progress.

Instead, Marcus found himself staring at an open hole in the floorboards.

Down in the dark cavity, Arthur was half-kneeling in the dirt, holding the trembling, disheveled woman against his chest.

Arthur looked up toward the opening at the sound of the footsteps.

His face changed instantly.

The gentle, reassuring expression he had worn while comforting the victim vanished. In its place was a look of absolute, chilling shock—a sudden, rigid terror that locked his jaw and made his eyes bulge.

Marcus didn't speak. He stared down into the hole, his face completely pale, his grip on the leather briefcase tightening until his knuckles turned white.

"Arthur... what is going on here?" Marcus finally asked, his voice disturbingly calm, entirely devoid of the normal human reaction one would expect upon discovering a tortured captive beneath a floorboards.

Arthur didn't answer right away. He slowly stood up in the narrow pit, pulling the woman up with him. She was unsteady on her feet, her legs shaking violently as if she hadn't walked upright in years. Arthur wrapped one arm around her waist, supporting her weight, and with a grunt of effort, hoisted her upward out of the crawlspace, guiding her onto the polished oak floor of the parlor.

Chloe came running back into the room holding Arthur’s heavy-duty smartphone out like a shield. "Daddy, I got the phone! Should I dial—"

She stopped dead in her tracks, lowering the phone as she looked at the strange woman standing in their clean parlor, dripping dirt onto the oak floor.

Arthur climbed out of the hatch behind them, brushing the dust off his knees, stepping between Chloe and the rescued woman. He kept his eyes locked on Marcus, who was standing motionless by the doorway.

Then came the moment that changed the entire scene.

The rescued woman, who had been staring blindly at the floor while trembling in Arthur’s grip, slowly lifted her head.

Her eyes focused on the man standing across the room.

Marcus Vance.

A wave of pure, unadulterated horror washed over her bruised and dirty face. Her breath hitched in her throat, cutting off her sobs. She raised her shaking, dirt-caked hand, pointing a trembling finger directly at Marcus.

She opened her mouth, letting out a choked, terrified shriek:

"Him!"
