Chapter 5 - The Architect of the Cage

The sirens wailing in the distance grew louder, their red and blue emergency lights painting flashing stripes across the living room windows of the old Victorian house.

Marcus knew he was cornered. The easy charm he used in boardrooms and real estate auctions had evaporated, leaving behind the frantic, feral panic of a cornered predator.

He lunged toward the front hallway, but Arthur moved with surprising speed. A lifelong athlete and contractor, Arthur grabbed Marcus by the collar of his expensive tweed jacket and slammed him hard against the hallway drywall, pinning him in place.

"Get your hands off me, you backwoods amateur!" Marcus snarled, thrashing against Arthur’s grip, his face turning an ugly shade of crimson.

"You stay right here," Arthur growled, his voice vibrating with a fury that made the walls shake. "You stay right here and look at what you did."

From the armchair, the rescued woman began to sob again—not the loud, desperate wails she had made in the dark, but a quiet, hopeless sound. She pointed a trembling finger at Marcus, her voice cracking as she forced the words past her dry lips.

"He... he said nobody would ever find me," she whispered, her voice like sandpaper rubbing against stone. "He said... if I screamed, he’d pour concrete down the hatch."

Marcus stopped struggling against Arthur’s grip. He slumped slightly, letting out a long, shuddering breath, before a dark, ugly sneer crept across his face.

"You stupid bitch," Marcus muttered, glaring at the woman in the chair. "You were supposed to stay down there until the probate court cleared the title transfer. You were supposed to be dead by winter."

Arthur’s eyes bulged. "Probate court? What are you talking about, Marcus? Who is she?"

Before Marcus could answer, the front door swung open with a crash, and two local police officers rushed into the hallway, their hands resting on their holstered sidearms.

"State your positions! Police!" the lead officer barked, his eyes darting between Arthur pinning Marcus to the wall, the shivering woman in the armchair, and little Chloe standing nervously behind them with the phone still in her hand.

"Officer, thank God," Arthur shouted, keeping his left hand clamped onto Marcus’s collar while raising his right. "I'm Arthur Vance, the homeowner. This man is Marcus Vance—no relation—my real estate broker. He sold me this house six months ago, and we just found a captive woman illegally imprisoned in a subterranean room beneath the parlor floor."

The lead officer’s jaw dropped. He looked at Marcus, then down at the woman, whose physical state confirmed every horrific word Arthur was saying.

"Cuffs on him. Now," the officer ordered his partner, stepping forward and grabbing Marcus’s right arm.

As the heavy steel handcuffs clicked around Marcus’s wrists, the second officer immediately radioed for backup, an ambulance, and a crime scene investigation unit.

The nightmare was finally stepping out of the dark and into the light.
