Chapter 4 - The Accusation

The single word hung in the air like a drop of poison in a clear glass of water.

“Him!”

Nobody in the parlor needed an explanation to understand that something was terribly, fundamentally wrong.

Just seconds earlier, everyone had been focused on the miracle of saving her. Arthur had been the hero who answered the call; Chloe had been the sharp-eyed little girl who heard the whisper beneath the floor. But now, the emotional gravity of the room shifted with violent speed.

The question became much darker, much more dangerous:

Why had she been hidden beneath the house in the first place?

And why, out of all the people in the world—out of Arthur, who had pulled her from the dirt, and little Chloe, who had discovered her—did she react with such primal, suffocating terror when she saw Marcus Vance?

Marcus didn't flinch, but his eyes darted nervously across the room. He forced a strained, brittle smile to his lips, though his jaw muscles twitched uncontrollably.

"Well," Marcus chuckled, a dry, nervous sound that didn't reach his eyes. "Well, look at this. It looks like some vagrant broke into the crawlspace while the house was vacant. Arthur, you really need to secure these old properties better. Who knows what kind of transient squatters wander in off the streets."

He took a step backward toward the hallway, his hand sliding toward the front door.

"I'll... I'll wait outside while you call the police," Marcus added, his voice pitching slightly upward. "No need for us all to be trapped in here with... whatever health hazards she might be carrying."

"Don't move, Marcus," Arthur said.

His voice wasn't loud. It wasn't angry. It carried the cold, absolute finality of a judge passing down a sentence.

Arthur’s eyes, usually warm and approachable, were now hard as flint. He looked down at the woman still leaning against his shoulder. She was staring at Marcus as if the devil himself had just walked through the front door, her whole body shaking so violently she could barely stand.

"Chloe, baby," Arthur said gently, looking down at his daughter without breaking eye contact with Marcus. "Take your phone, walk out to the front porch, and dial 911 right now. Tell them we found a woman trapped in an illegal cellar, and tell them to dispatch detectives immediately."

"Okay, Daddy," Chloe whispered, her eyes wide with fear as she looked between her father and the strange man by the door. She clutched the phone tightly and sprinted down the hall.

Marcus’s polite facade finally cracked. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking sickly and gray beneath the overhead light.

"Arthur, don't be ridiculous," Marcus hissed, taking another step toward the exit. "You're going to ruin a six-month real estate closing and drag me into some insane homeless woman's delusion? Let me go, or I swear to God you'll be paying legal fees for the rest of your natural life."

"You sold me this house, Marcus," Arthur said quietly, walking toward him, placing the trembling woman gently into an armchair by the bookshelf. "You sold it to me 'as-is,' cash offer, no inspections needed, provided I agreed not to touch the interior flooring for at least six months while 'the foundation settled.'"

Marcus swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively. He didn't answer.

"And you were the only other person in this neighborhood," Arthur continued, closing the distance between them until he was standing two feet from his former friend, "who had a duplicate key to the front door."
