Chapter 7 - The Master of the House Steps Forward

The heavy oak doors did not open politely. They swung inward with concussive force, slamming against the stone doorstops with a sound like a gunshot.

The entire dining room froze on its axis.

Standing in the center of the threshold was Dominic Mercer.

He did not wear the rumpled clothes of a traveler who had just stepped off a commercial flight. He wore a bespoke midnight-blue suit, pressed to razor-sharp perfection, his white shirt open at the throat, his posture straight, commanding, and radiating the unyielding, terrifying authority of a sovereign king returning to his court.

Beside him walked Mateo Rossi and four armed executive security guards in dark tactical suits.

Behind them, carrying a silver tray with a single black leather folder, walked Emma Collins.

A collective, breathless gasp tore through the thirty guests.

Julian Harrington’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers, smashing violently against the parquet floor, splashing golden wine across his polished leather shoes.

Brooke stood paralyzed at the head of the table. The triumphant smile on her face curdled instantly into a mask of pure, unadulterated horror. Her mouth opened slightly, but her throat seized, producing only a faint, choked squeak.

"Dominic...?" Brooke whispered, the color draining from her face until she looked like an alabaster statue. "You... you were in London."

Dominic did not answer immediately.

He walked down the center runner of the dining hall with slow, measured, rhythmic strides. The room was so silent you could hear the faint click of his boots against the wood. He bypassed the high-society guests, bypassed the commercial bankers, and bypassed Julian as if they were made of thin air.

He stopped at the far end of the table where Natalie stood holding Noah.

Dominic dropped to one knee.

He wrapped his massive, strong arms around his sister and his nephew, pulling both of them into a fierce, protective embrace, resting his chin on Noah’s trembling head.

"I’m here, buddy," Dominic murmured softly, his deep voice carrying through the silent hall. "Uncle Dominic is home. Nobody is ever going to touch you or your mother again."

Noah wrapped his small arms around Dominic’s neck, weeping with profound, overwhelming relief.

Dominic slowly rose to his full height of six-foot-three. The tenderness that had touched his face when holding his family vanished completely, replaced by an expression of cold, merciless granite that made the temperature in the vast room plummet to sub-zero.

Dominic turned slowly to face Brooke.

"I didn't leave London this morning, Brooke," Dominic said, his voice flat, steady, and terrifyingly clear. "I arrived in this house at five o'clock on Thursday morning. I was standing behind the service door in the pantry when you broke the porcelain cup over Emma's shoes. I was in the library gallery when you smashed my mother's lacquer box. And I was in the parlor wall when Harrison Cole stamped your forged signature."

Brooke’s knees gave out. She had to grab the edge of the mahogany table with both hands to keep from collapsing onto the floor.
