Chapter 9 - The Restoration of Catherine's Sanctuary

By Sunday morning, the mansion on the Newport cliffs was filled with a profound, healing tranquility.
The pretentious white orchids and funeral lilies that Brooke had ordered were stripped from every room and loaded into disposal trucks, replaced by vibrant bouquets of blue and purple hydrangeas—Catherine Mercer’s favorite flowers—cut fresh from the estate gardens.
In the sunlit library, the portrait of Catherine Mercer looked down upon a transformed room.
Dominic sat behind his mother’s restored mahogany desk, dressed in a comfortable charcoal cashmere sweater. Beside him sat Natalie, looking radiant, healthy, and completely unburdened, holding a mug of warm chamomile tea.
Noah sat on the leather sofa, happily reading his maritime lighthouse book, with Emma Collins sitting beside him, helping him build a model wooden schooner.
Arthur Pendelton walked into the library carrying the newly ratified charter of the Catherine Mercer Family Land Trust, stamped with the official seal of the Rhode Island Supreme Court.
"Dominic, Natalie," Pendelton said with a wide, genuine smile, laying the documents before them. "The court has formally vacated all fraudulent filings. The east cottage and the surrounding twenty acres of coastal woodland have been placed into an irrevocable, non-transferable trust naming Noah Mercer as the sole primary beneficiary upon his twenty-first birthday, with Natalie serving as permanent executive trustee."
Natalie touched the legal seal, tears of pure, overwhelming gratitude glistening in her eyes.
"Thank you, Dominic," Natalie whispered, reaching across the desk to cover her brother's hand with hers. "Thank you for defending Mom's promise."
"Mom made that promise to both of us, Natalie," Dominic replied softly, squeezing her fingers. "As long as I draw breath, nobody will ever take your home away."
Dominic turned his gaze toward Emma Collins, who was gently adjusting the sails on Noah’s wooden boat.
"Emma," Dominic spoke, his voice rich with deep, enduring respect.
Emma stood up politely, folding her hands in front of her. "Yes, Mr. Mercer?"
Dominic slid a sealed leather folio across the desk toward her.
"Inside this folder is the permanent title deed to the gatehouse cottage at the south entrance of the estate," Dominic announced. "Alongside an executive appointment as the General Operations Director of the Mercer Estate and Charitable Foundations, with a vested salary and an educational endowment for your family."
Emma’s breath hitched. Her hands began to shake as she looked at the deed. "Mr. Mercer... Dominic... I cannot accept this. I was only doing my job. I was protecting Noah and Natalie."
May you like
"You did not just do your job, Emma," Dominic said, rising from his chair and walking over to place a gentle hand on her shoulder. "When everyone in this house was intimidated by a liar, you stood your ground. You protected my family when I was three thousand miles away. In this house, loyalty is not repaid with a paycheck. It is repaid with family. You will always have a home here."
Emma buried her face in her hands, weeping with profound relief and joy, while Noah jumped up from the sofa, wrapping his arms around her waist in a joyful, energetic hug.
